If you could stand outside and watch the bidders that have not shown up yet it would be like outlaws waiting for train. The big kids haven't shown up as yet.

Almost every auction gets all the bidding done it the last few hours. They sometime sit all week with no bids until the last hours when everyone seems to throw a bid on it. I guess Sunday night we will all be watching and refreshing that page.

When shipping a rare expensive rifle, what extra precautions would one take? Obviously packed in a hard case, for this I would buy the best pelican and insure it. Would UPS/FedEx ship a rifle that you insured for $20K

I don't bother insuring my high value items....it is virtually impossible to get UPS/FEDEX to pay up claims on one-of-a-kind high value items they can't just google for comparables.

My firearms insurance covers my firearms in shipment.

20 large handed over to Larry, Moe, and Curley at shipping office? Not on your f***in life. It's me traveling there in person with companions and cash. I see it before anyone gets paid, then I take it home. It also cuts out any bullshit, I travel half a continent then what I am told was there better be there, I am coming back with either a rifle in my bag or someone's head.

I'm wondering how Century feels about losing out on a 15 to $20,000.00 rifle that was cherry picked by a former employee without their knowledge, if it is or was???

P.S. I will be in the crowd in the last 15 minutes of this rifle watching it go to it's final buyer. Should I bring popcorn??? :pop:

I was thinking about this too. It almost seems unethical of sorts? I mean I guess its a perk of the job. I wished I had it!

My guess is he was involved with the processing of these cheap old dirty rifles. Seeing hundreds and hundreds of them go through that when an oddball one came along, he set it aside for himself. That was a good move considering there was no info on them at that time. If he didn't buy them, they would have been sold with the rest and how many lost to bubba or set in a barn to rust away.

If these were costing Joe public $45 at that time, how much did he pay? $20?

Kind of like the current refurbs, you used to get whatever was shipped and it could be a hex, double date or any other collectable. Now the sellers sorts them and price them accordingly.

Well it just sold for 12.5K and IMO it is well worth the money. Could be the rarest of all Finn rifles. I am glad to see the new owner step up to the plate, when something this rare comes along many times you only have one chance and the new owner took it. Also this proves to me that these rifles are becoming more and more collectible, people are starting to take notice, and I am glad. As more people learn the history and what the Finnish people achieved under extremely harsh conditions then these firearms will take their rightful place among some great collections. To the individual that got this gun, congratulations and enjoy. ( that person is a member of this forum)

A little anticlimactic but still a cool moment in history as far as collecting Mosins.

+1  I thought it would go a little higher. I told my wife I was going to bid on it when it first broke 12,000 just so I could say I had a bid in on it. She frowned on that idea. :very mad: You talk about eating ramen noodles and spam for a month......how about that meal served in a doghouse for a much longer time.

It is good to see these rifles selling in the price range once reserved for Colt SAA's with known heritage or Winchester 1873's. 20 years ago if I had told folks that a "Russian rifle" would sell for over 12 grand they flat out wouldn't have believed me, and then laughed me out of the room.
