GB auction - Rare Finnish SAT M91 Mosin Nagant

Post by professor9 »

Hi guys - my apologies if this is already being discussed, but what am I missing here?
I can understand only 200 produced, and I could understand a few thousand, but over twelve?

Pardon me but ... holy crap !! :big shock:

**here was once the link to a rare Finn M91, it may return once the auction is over*****
1915 Westinghouse Finn, Fox Receiver, SA marked

We have a no live auctions rule here, but this one I will leave up for now as I just don't thing many of us will be running out to top that 12 grand bid. Things that are very rare will command high prices, that's true in any form of collecting. This rifle is very rare, and as you can see, vary expensive.

My apologies for busting the rules. I will not let that happen again.
I understand that low numbers mean rarity, was just wondering more of the details as i hadn't heard of this puppy before.

This rifle is a M91 made like any other M91 the Finns made, what makes it rare is the marking from Riihimaki, and the very low production. There are millions of M91's, but only 200 with the Riihimaki marking. Figure in war losses and normal wear over time and that number still existing is likely 50 or less.

You would have a better chance of finding a US M1873 carbine traceable to a known member of the Rough Riders who charged the San Juan heights than you would finding one of these Riihimaki M91's

I was going to bid on that but now you have brought widespread attention to it and drove it over my bid :x which was about $100. Do you get the idea why now. I saw this it was much lower than that and said to my self I wonder how high it would go. Watch now others will pop out of the woodwork with very high reserve or opening bids. I guess there are just certain things we mortals were not meant to have. Just think that is approximately only 60 refurbs! Now that is an investment! Just think you could shoot it too! It's just a simply made M91 for civilian purpose! Bill

Just think of how many may be just sitting in closets the owners having no clue what they have. If you knocked on their door and offered then $500 for their old Russian rifle they would set a world speed record getting " that old piece of shit gun" out for you. Just think that back in '89, or '90 these were sold for $25-$45 with all the other Finn M91's, and had few takers.

My guess at the start was around $10,000... I am apparently wrong, we are witnessing the highest amount of money ever spent on a mosin. History in the making. The reality is there are only maybe a dozen collectors in the world who are into Mosins and have pockets deep enough to bring this one home. But when two Goliaths battle, it's always interesting.

I bet the seller Steve, picked this along with his other mosins for next to nothing. Working for the importer I too would be buying all the different oddballs I saw coming through.

I bet there are only a handful of these in existence, a collector who wants every type may never even get another chance to buy one so this is going to cost big for whoever wins it.

Sorry, that the link was removed, so that we could all see what it was all about :vconfused: .

If it was selling for over $1K, then to each his own.

I'm not that much of a of a collector, unless I was a museum firearms collector with unlimited funds :bwink:

Of which represents majority of collectors on this forum, of which probably represents 95% that just like to enjoy a low cost of ownership and relativity low cost of ammunition with which they go out and enjoy themselves with or fiends and family, and are not intrested in resale for profit motives.

I liked the comment,(parphrased) "No collection is complete without one of these".
Damn, I'll bet that's going to leave a mark! Probably hurt too!

At least one of the bidders is a member of this forum.

And that is why we don't post live auctions, and it would be even better if we didn't discuss them either, at least the bidder would likely say.
