Trapdoor Carbine

If it fires black powder, it is discussed here.

Trapdoor Carbine

Post by Darryl »

I got this Springfield Model 1873 Trapdoor Carbine some months back and have just loaded 45-70 govt. ammo for it this last week.

The bore is bright and shiny with good rifling and has the Buffington rear sight upgrade and front barrel band upgrade (to protect the rear sight)

Cast up some bullets and loaded some ammo for it. Ready to go to the range.

Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

Nice looking rifle. I don't know much about them other than what Hickoc45 has posted on Utube.

Forgive me being a novice. But is the picture with the rounds a way of showing how you changed the shell on the right, to a shell on the left?

I just shot my first reloads yesterday for the Makarov. I'm still here.

Edit. Never mind. Just went to your link. Picture was just comparing rounds.

It was around $950. They usually run about $900 to about $1500. This is a real carbine and not a cut down from a rifle or a later 1884. Also, they run into the thousands if they are correct and in the "Custer" serial number range. This one is just outside of that serial number range.

This is a nice collectable and shooter also.

I'd be at USI for sure, but I have some trouble with my eyes right now and I'm not allowed to go shooting right now. I just have to wait for a while.

I have a Snider carbine I'm looking forward to take with it.

Yes, it is just for comparison (I should have said that here). The 45-70 round is so popular (even now) that these is a ton of brass for it at a very reasonable price. Not like my Snider carbine where I had to make the brass from a brass shotgun round and reform it. Still, it is a lot of fun loading black powder ammo.

The bullet in a Mosin is around 180 gr or so for heavy ball, and 45-70 that I am using, (which is the light bullet) is 505 gr. Most of that bullet is "in the brass" and not exposed. It is a large slug!

Amazing, you can get nearly 14 bullets from a pound of lead! :P
