Possible Finnish Capture 91/30?
Possible Finnish Capture 91/30?
I won this rifle today for ~$70 and I wont have my hands on it for a couple of weeks. I may be confused but I've never seen a Russian imported 91/30 with the dog collars attached w/o a sling (haven't been into Mosin Nagant rifles too long.) The rest of the photos looked like they were taken with a potato so cant tell much. The stock looked to have a toe splice and a faint Tula star. The description stated it was a 1939 but no pictures of the barrel shank at all. My first thought was Finn capture or possibly Balkan so in the end, is the hanging dog collars indicative of a Finn capture or is it common with Russian imports as well?

Most likely a Russian arsenal refurbed 91/30, the dog collars are normal it's just missing sling. For 70 bucks you did good.

Most likely a standard Russian refurb without the sling. But you will have to post it once you get it

Looks like someone got a good deal.

Hard to tell from the photos, which are pretty blurry and indistinct. But from what little is discernible, the stock looks like it might have that Finn oiled or stained finish. The rear sling slot escutcheon looks like the style with the 2 little screws, which is the type most commonly found on Finn captured Mosins. The bolt body is the d1934 and earlier style with the little rounded boss or "collar" where the handle attaches to the body - again, these are pretty common on all Finn Mosins. The early style handguard with brass endcaps is also something you see on lot of Finn rifles.
Many of the Finn rifles that were imported did have the dog collars but no sling, or the Finn sling hangers in the sling slot but no sling.
So yes, all things considered, there is an above average chance that this is a Finn captured rifle....I certainly don't see anything (from the little we can see) that would automatically rule that out.
Regardless, for $70 you won the lottery. At the very least you have a nice shooter that is worth more than you paid for it. And if it is a Finn capture, you did real well as it's easily worth twice what you paid for it.

Yeah, at $70 I was fine even with a everyday refurb. Here is the only other decent photo that shows the rear sling escutcheon, tula stamp and toe nail.

I have a 1939 Izhevsk that looks quite a bit like that. Mine has been refurbed, but the stock seems to have missed out on the rework. There are no pins in the rear sight either.

Looks like a WW2 pigskin dog collar in that rear slot...again, looks Finn capture to me.
Re: Possible Finnish Capture 91/30?
Marcus from the looks of that second pic, you might be on to something. I think the needle is leaning a little more toward finn capture, at least I hope so. That would be a great steal if it turns out to be finn capture. OP please give us an update when it arrives.

Pip, did you buy this rifle from only the two pictures? If you have more pictures you should post em up. Either way, you did good for 70.00 unless the whole left side has been singed on on a open flame or something. 70 dollar rifles are hard to find these days.
Re: Possible Finnish Capture 91/30?
Nice rifle for a great price. Finn or Balkan, it's really nice. You do need to post more pictures of this. All matching but the bolt - Balkan,i.e. from Romania. The stock does look sneaky Finn but the '39's were issued in pre war stocks. Will have to see more picture of this rifle. I'm not sure what you mean by toe splice - my old eyes didn't see a splice. The Russians and the Finns, the Finns more often, pieced together stocks. You can't mistake their splice nor the Russian splice for that matter. Could be a Romanian splice too!!!! Have to see the PIC's I say

Re: Possible Finnish Capture 91/30?
Should have this rifle this week, however I have an off topic question on another rifle I won. What is the going rate for a Tikka 91/30? (not sure if 43 or 44). I'm curious since I got shafted on shipping and wonder if I atleast came out close to even. (mostly my own stupidity for not fully reading auction terms)
Re: Possible Finnish Capture 91/30?
Tikka 91/30 is $250 and up depending on condition, the accuracy of the Tikka will really impress you.
Re: Possible Finnish Capture 91/30?
For $70 you knocked it out the park on that one.
Congrats
