54 Izhevsk Original on Gun Brokers

Post by OLD OUTLAW »

Look at this! http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewIt ... =266347084

This is what happens when you get three idiots with high Testosterone bidding against each other. Seems that 53 Izhevsk only went
for $1350 as I seem to recall. This $1380 is just way out there in Space Cadet land.
I give up on people like them.

Totally uneducated on rifles. I just wonder what those last three boys were a smoking in those little pipes of theirs.

Problem is... Once that price happens it sets the bar for the next one. It may not go for as much, but it does incrementally go higher.

The rifles of this ilk don't come much nicer than that. It was worth a premium of up to $200 over an average to good 1954 Izhevsk. That said, an average to good 1954 Izhevsk should usually sell for $7-800. So the buyer paid a premium premium (read: double premium! ) of $4-500. Yet, he owns the gun, and I do not!

Stock looks humped to me. Izhevsk symbol is sanded, date and serial number look to be hand drawn.

I guess that I don't see it? The font and size are the same as mine, though not struck nearly as deep.

(please pardon my old amateur photography skills!)

Still not seeing it. Fonts look identical in size and shape, to me. I see the shellac brush strokes, but no sanding marks crossing through the wood grain. The 5 does have the appearance of being struck with the die angled slightly to the right.

But that's just me.

I hope you all don't mind that I played with this a bit. I am trying to learn here

I thought the auction stock looked hand "etched" as well. So, I got out my forensic hat and decided to find out.

First, here are the two date stamps resized, rotated and washed out so they are similar:

And here is the auction stamp reduced to 60% opacity and placed on top of martin's stamp:

Image

Even zooming in, I felt that they were different stamps...until I placed them on top of each other.

Well, I'll be...

That is far more technical than I'd ever be able to perform. I was relying on my eye to compare individual font shapes, and could not find any inconsistencies. But I think your little experiment took it to a whole different level!

I had this rifle on my watch list, just to see how the bidding went. It was 700 bucks a couple nights ago
Holy Crap.

Good job on the detective work, Cliff. You've got a real eye for detail and the computer skills to back it up
