Izhmash CM-2 Adult

Post by Titanium Hammer »

Last night I finally made it to my FFL to pick up the Swiss K31 I had ordered from AIM a couple of weeks ago. Well he's had a CM-2 in his personal collection that I have been drooling over ever since I was too late to order one & got put on Centerfire Systems backorder list. I was crushed when Centerfire eventually dropped the backorder list and said that they wouldn't be able to get any more units in stock. It didn't help matters that there are a couple of guys at my local range who were smart enough to jump on the Centerfire deal and pick up a couple. I would drool over their CM's every time they brought them to the range. Lucky for me, my FFL just bought a run down local gun shop and was looking to generate some extra cash so I was able to pry her out of his hands. I took her to the range this morning and she did not disappoint! I was also fortunate enough to run into a helpful group of Russian guys who helped me to translate the markings on the diopter so that I was able to get her sited in. The last group of the day I had 10 shots at 25yards inside of a dime using Federal 40 grain ammunition which I'm sure I can tighten up even more with some better ammo and more practice time with the diopter. It was the first experience I've ever had using a diopter and I've got to say that it was pretty cool. I really like this rifle and according to the paperwork that came with it, it was made in 2008. The enclosed test target shows 10 shots @ 50m with a spread of 14mm. I also had to enclose a pretty funny page from the owners manual that deals with the mandatory "annihilation" of the packing paper. :chuckles: I apologize for the rather uninspiring photos but it's been raining very hard all afternoon so no outside pics for me today.

You need go join the local smallbore club and shoot some prone matches with that little lovely.
“Freedom is the right to tell people what they do not want to hear.” George Orwell, English novelist, essayist, and critic, 1903-1950

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

Hammer, that is a very nice rig. I hope with practice you can shrink that rediculous 10 shot group. You are embarrassing the forum!

Thanks for the compliments guys! I really love this rifle & I can't tell you how happy I am that I was finally able to track one down. The Sportsmen's Club that I belong to doesn't have any matches per se but since there are now three of us that I know of who have CM-2's I think I'll see if I can't put a bug in their ear to start doing some matches. Greasemonkey, that is a gorgeous one. The older ones don't seem to come up on GB very often and when they do they can get pretty pricey. Is that one made by Vostok? You have got to get her out to the range soon. Bunkysdad, that's the test target from the factory @ 50 meters. I started out at 50 yards & then went down to 25 as I was having trouble understanding the adjustments on the diopter. Once I got her dialed in there were about 8 shots on top of one another and two that were touching the other 8. I really can't wait to get back out to the range with her this weekend. Shooting it even brought a smile to Lotema's face and normally only a nice Mosin can do that!

It is stamped "Vostok". I didn't realize they had changed the rear sight attachment as much as they did. Looks like yours fits on a top dovetail, where mine attaches on the side. When I got mine, it had a custom scope mount made to fit in place of the rear sight, negates the need to drill and tap  , which many have had done. :big shock: Thats what is attached to the side of the receiver, part of the scope mount. One other nice thing is the rear sight is number matched, some on the market aren't.

I plan on getting it out soon, either when real life backs off a bit :? or I find a scope.

Greasemonkey you have got to get her out to the range soon. I volunteered for a quick job today that just happened to be down the street from my range so I loaded up the CM-2 and hit the range when I finished up the job. Warm and breezy day today but I was able to throw about 100 rounds of Federal AutoMatch downrange before my eyes gave out. The diopter is very cool to use but it really messes up my eyes at 50 yards after about 80 shots. Anyway, here is the target from today. As with most foreign .22 rifles this CM-2 is a bit picky about ammunition but the Federal brand of .22 seems to be tolerated much better by the CM-2 than the CCI, Winchester, or Remington. That being said, it really prefers SK, Lapua, Geco, and Wolf Match Target but since those are all 2-5x the cost of the Federal, I'll stick with the Federal stuff for plinking. Here is the last sheet for the day @ 50 yards with 10 shots in each target & one playing around orange dot that I stuck on there to see if I could actually see it through the diopter...I guess I did!

Met up with Lotema yesterday at our local Sportsmens' Club and although it was a bit breezy at times I was pretty happy with the results at 50 yards. I'm getting more used to the diopter. 3 shots of Federal AutoMatch in each target. I am really enjoying this rifle! :D

The only person I know who could hit my 50yd target with a .45 would be your wife & she hardly ever comes to the range.
