Bass Fishing at Local Lake - Surprise Surprise Surprise

Post by RazorBurn »

Went bass fishing this past Saturday at a local lake. Ran upstream to the more river area/headwaters of the lake. I ended up catching one decent keeper bass, and lost another at the boat. I was fishing a square bill crankbait on a stump flat off the main channel drop, and hooked into this flathead catfish. Certainly made for an interesting day. After dragging me and my 19 foot bass boat half across the river I ended up landing him. Getting this one in the boat is a testament to how good Trilene 12 pound test Big Game mono line is. Was a hoot catching it on 12 pound test line and a medium action St. Croix rod. I'm glad I hooked him on the St. Croix, I'd bet money a cheaper rod would have broken with it's dives under the boat.

It ended up weighing in at 14 pounds 4 ounces on my cheap Berkley digital scale, and made for an interesting fishing trip.

Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

You know, I thought I saw Billy Bob and Jim Bob sneaking around the bank.

The Turtle Man called me a pussy for catching it on line and hook. Supposedly I'm supposed to jump in and bare hand it. Yeah right! :chuckles:

In all seriousness though I am a fisherman as well and I know the fun of getting a big surprise on the end of your light tackle.

My ultralite, ML and M have all hooked into a few big ones over the years and it always makes for a fun/interesting time/fight.

If he called me that he would be the one going in to bare hand that thing, possibly unconscious.

My best friend e-mailed a few pictures he took while I was working on catching the catfish so I thought I would share them.
