Re: Question for you shooters
To safe a Mosin, remove bolt, place in pocket, the weapon is not safe, it can still club somebody, but it will not fire a round, to safe it place in closet, lock door. The only safety that works is your brain, learn the basics of keeping fingers off triggers, treating every weapon as if it was loaded, know what you are pointing the muzzle at, not chambering a round until ready to fire it, back again treating to all weapons as loaded all the time.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.
Don't hit at all if it is honorably possible to avoid hitting; but never hit soft.

The Mosin safety is acceptable, but it doesn't have the inherent fail-safe assurance that a Mauser bolt and receiver uses. It is open to having the safety knocke into fire position more than other safeties. For the day it was designed and for the troops it was designed for it was ok.
