Kristie-sounds like you might have a tight or short chamber. If your buddy's reloads didn't work well through it, he might be just neck sizing them (in which case he shouldn't be giving them to you, he should know better if he reloads), which would cause the same problems as the steel case stuff in a tight chamber. Can you hand chamber rounds easily?(drop them into the chamber?) And do they just drop out when the barrel is tipped up when you do so? If so, and the rounds are still hard to get in and out using the bolt, your chamber is probably short, something even a go gauge in 7.62x54R will not reveal, because it is not a full length gauge, since the round headspaces on the rim. Have the shoulders on any cases you've chambered been pushed in/collapsed? That would be a positive indication of a short chamber. Short of actually inspecting the rifle myself, I've pretty much run out of ideas for you.

rjmt- Just slide the old bolt out, the new one in, and check the headspace. If it passes the no-go, (does not close to battery) you're done.

Entropy:
I have no idea how he does the reloads. I figure he does them right, becuase he really enjoys it, and says he considers himself more of a relaoder than a shooter. And he's been doing it for about 50 years or so, too.

Any of the four types of ammo I've tried can be dropped right into the chamber and slide right back out without any problem. I haven't noticed any deformation of the rounds. There have been a couple of split cases, that's all.

Gbeecher65:

I've looked at those Bear brands of ammo before and considered getting them because they are about the cheapest I've seen besides surplus. Still too high for me, though! Haven't seen the third one. And just because they cycle easily for you doesn't mean they will for me. I think these rifles are all different from one another.

I think I might just have gotten a bad one, too. And that's why I didn't spend an hour trying to pick the perfect one. I just grabbed one that the bolt seemed to work smoothly on. I sure really do hate thinking of getting rid of this one because I've sure enjoyed tinkering with it. And I'm nervous to try and pick out a new one, too. I just don't know what to do!

I buy the Novosibirsk online thru Ammunitionstore.com; it's now $8.99 for a box of 20. Unfortunately, you won't get much cheaper shooting, unless you go to 7.62x39, and then the gun (ak-47) will cost 3-5 times more than buying a Mosin. I guess either shoot your Mosin and put up with finicky ammo, or buy another one..

I had to sand off a burr with 400 grit sandpaper then lube the extractor before I could chamber a round. Everything works fine now that it's had a chance to work.
Exactly why when I safety inspect the extractor gets removed and checked along with the track it sets in too. I will not tell you the sneaky quick way I have also learned to avoid removing them which I use when time is of the essence, like at the range. You could go through a whole box of bolt heads before the problem is solved at times. My buddies yesterday was just the second one and we were fine. I am real short on extractors right now and we had to remove the one off his old one. With the headspace closely connected with the rim on Mosins they are all pretty close so you can get away with fewer problems I guess as many people never check the headspace and get away with it. Not me I have to be sure of what I have for my safety and those shooting next to me at the range. Good Luck! Bill :D

That's pretty cheap, but shipping is probably that much or more. Something to keep in mind, though. Thanks for the link.
