Read the Small Print

Post by catcracker »

I was lucky enough to get the Swiss K31 bayonet for $29.95 from Aimsurplus. So I am happy in the end. But I did not read the details on the sale they had on M44 replacement hand guards. Really, I miss interpreted it. I though new production meant not ever been assembled onto an M44. What it really means is cheap knockoffs of M44 hand guards made in India. $12 dollars for two. $12 dollar lesson learned on reading more closely.

It's $12, one less Big Mac next Mickey D's trip, a cheap lesson, education like that can be very expensive, you got off lightly.

The last time I got burned from the fine print I was out way more than 12 bucks. You were fortunate. Show us a picture if you can. I have wondered about these for a long time.

I'm a firm believer in the old saw, "If it's too good to be true, it probably is." This is not to say that the rare bargain doesn't come up. But they are rare, and usually seem to involve a seller who doesn't really know the value of what he's offering. You need to be very, very circumspect.

Eventually, I'll be caught-out. There's always that other person who is more clever/unscrupulous. And I've walked away from a few "deals" that may have been the real thing. But I try to do my research, and I listen to my "gut."

Yep! I snagged one of those a year ago. Mine had a visible warp and it LOOKED cheap. More trouble than it was worth to send it back. Threw that isht right in the trash!

At Aim it states new production and at least they are priced accordingly. They do have the original handguard for the 91/30.

Forget m44's there is a demand for m91 handguards, surprised no one is making them yet.

Mostly true. But the Swiss K31 bayonet was only 29.95. That is almost to good to be true too. And I got a real nice one.
I didn't need the hand guards. Just looked like another bargain. I've got about 8 extra 91/30 stocks also from a sale from Aimsurplus. I don't need them. But who knows. Maybe someday I will.

Pictures of hand guards to follow, when I get the time.

I was fooled by them too. My logic said that if they had been selling complete 91/30 stock sets for $14.95 it was logical to assume that these handguards were for real. Oh well cheap and very dark knockoffs. I'm sure they would fit but would look totally out of place. A cheap lesson learned. :very mad:

Now that I have taken them out of the package, they are probably worth 5 dollars. I will hold on to them. They could be a nice place holder for a missing one if I should find a bubba or one missing a hand guard.
Here are pictures as requested.

Oh here we go. This Indian teak schmick is the bane of the black powder world. A bunch of farbed up junk, some of which is downright dangerous. Now they're widening their field of endeavor to Mosins? Great. :very mad:

I can hardly wait to see their first teak-wood, white pot metal "authentic" M91/30. :furious:

Thanks so much for having the gumption to post your "error". A lot of guys have looked at those ads, wondering if they should pull the trigger on one. It's great posts like yours that make a collecting community all the stronger....

There was a guy on Gunboards last year doing it. I just don't think that you could manufacture them cheaply enough to make enough margin. No profit, no effort.
