Polish M44 Happy Birthday to me!

Post by markophonic »

Bought myself a 1952 Polish M44 for my birthday :D

It's a bit of a hodge podge. Barrel and floorplate match. Bolt does not match. Hungarian stock, Budapest arsenal, Hungarian buttplate. Dark stock with a light top handguard.

It's been counterbored. Nice bright bore.

I dub thee "the mongrel" 8-)

Does anyone know what the two "4" stamps located above and below the date are?

I'm going to spend the night cleaning it up and getting it ready to shoot!

A nice carbine. Looks to have been a Hungarian used rifle, maybe. Could have been sent as aid to them and the stock and other parts replaced. The 4s could be a hun mark as they had a little crest mark with a number on the hun carbines. Some 2 and some 4. All of this is just guess work by me though. :vcool: :vcool: :vcool:

Romanian used, the parts mix is normal for these, my Hungarian M44 has a Polish stock, and a mix of Hungarian and Romanian parts, it's just how the Romanian peoples army kept these rifles going. Very nice, happy birthday, I get all the best shit from me also :)

Here are a few more pics I've taken while disassembling.

Receiver tang marking

Image

The upper handguard has a thin wood veneer shim.

Some pencil marking inside the stock lower handguard...seems to correspond with the shim

Image

Stamping on the buttstock. More number "4"

Image

This thin has a heavy finish on it with several drips and runs. It has been sanded against the grain. Does this finish seem typical?
