Re: First timer here.. Two new Mosins
Thank you, Weldon.. I was worried that it would discharge on closing the bolt. Still a little newbish..
Had the 91/30 out at the range last night and was a little surprised to see people wander over from neighboring ranges to inquire about it. Figured everybody knows what they are.. One fellow let me shoot his SKS. And now I want..

That shouldn't happen because the firing pin depth is out of specs. It would have to be very very very far out of specs. if it's even possible. The bolt is cocked on extraction (lifting it up the handle) which draws the firing pin back into the bolt face and it stays there until you reseat the bolt to it's full stopped position after pushing it back forward and down and you pull the trigger. That is as long as the sear/stop is doing it's job. When you push the bolt forward the firing pin is still inside the bolt head and the sear/stop catches the stop on the underside of the cocking knob to hold the firing pin in place as you rotate the bolt down.Chiroptile wrote:Thank you, Weldon.. Haha I've had that happen a time or two and been surprised that people didn't know what a mosin was but I have to remind myself that not everyone likes milsurps :p. Had a gentleman take up nearly an hour talking to me about my krag the other day, it was also hard to turn down a $1500 offer for it but its a family relic ;).Chiroptile wrote:

I'm broke because I buy milsurps. I'm rich because I buy what I enjoy.

The two main things to be concerned about with an improperly adjusted firing pin is too short and you can have light strikes and misfires or in the worst case scenario maybe hangfires. If it's to long you get deep primer strikes and possibly pierced primers which are not fun and potentially dangerous. It can even cause blow back into the bolt face/firing pin hole and other interesting things. It sounds like you have it adjusted just fine though.

Thanks, mogunner.. This is actually an old thread I resurrected.. Didn't know what would be better, to start a new one or to just add to this one. Either way, that was back in November, and I've added two more since then..
I'm up in Kirksville, but will be relocating down to Springfield this summer. NYC transplant as of two years ago (Hence the newbiness..)

Bunky's, Thank you.. That's actually what raised my suspicions initially.. at 1:52 you can see the narrator point out that you can see daylight between the pin and the gauge.. On my bolt the pin contacts the gauge so there is no daylight.. I think I'll just fire the first couple of rounds from the stand and not stick my face behind it to make sure it's all peaches..
