Very nice Finnish Mosin Nagant found at gunshow this last w

Post by martinincanada »

Found this super nice shape Finnish Mosin Nagant at a gunshow this weekend and as I'm not that familar in Mosin's I was wondering if any of you experts out their can tell me about it. I think it is straight out of arsenal storage as it was filled with a very old and thick grease and the stock is in great shape with no wear same with the butt plate finish, also the bore is like new once I went through about 10 patches to clean the grease out.

Guy selling it had two exactly the same and another guy bought the 2nd one. The seller said they have been in a collection for many years.

Bolt is forced matched to the serial number on barrel and the trigger is the best I have felt on any Mosin, very short and light single stage let off. This rifle should be a excellent shooter. So judging by the pictures below, what is it?

It is a P-26. The barrel was relined . This is a pretty rare rifle. There is a data base that would like to have your barrel info. I'll find the link when I get home if someone doesn't beat me to it. Very good find!

Was the other rifle he had also a P-26? Many collectors will never even see one of these. They are quite valuable as long as it doesn't get ruined by refinishing the stock or metal. Good find, and hopefully you can find a lot of info regarding the P-26 barrel relining procedure. Google will point you to all of the usual sources of info. The Finnish model 1891 is nice enough to find, but you step into the shoes of more advanced collectors when you find such a find as this one.

I must be lucky because I also found a 1940 Tula M38 carbine in excellent condition about 6 months ago that I found out was also rare -

And you guys wonder why I always say I would rather be lucky than good? Great finds and after maybe shooting that one time I would retire it to become a safe queen. Make sure if it has import marking they did not strike the barrel hard enough to bulge the liner inward and make it unsafe to shoot. That barrel was lined by a process they call the Salerno process developed by the Italians and copied by the Finn's. I can only speculate how rugged that liner would be and how long it would last actively shooting it so like I said maybe one time to the range and I would put it aside to enjoy being handled and fondled the rest of its life. Congrats again! Bill :D

Definitely these came from a serious collection, and sometimes you just have to wait till the owner dies before the collection gets broken up. If you could have got them both, you would not have hit a grand slam, you would have won the world series. By the way, they were ALMOST the same, but not quite the same. 2 P-26's would be the same. The opportunity to purchase a P-26 and a P-27 would likely be substantially more valuable together than a pair of the same P-series.

I would have loved to have grabbed both, but you know how it is at a gunshow with other guys looking over your shoulder. I got to the show early on Saturday morning (it was a 2 day show, Sat & Sun) hoping to find something nice, and the guy selling these was at one of the back of the hall tables, by the time I got to him another guy had the other Finnish Mosin already in his hands and had made a deal. :angry4:

Up here in Canada we don't have that stupid marking law, so all ex-mil guns that came here are un-marked just like they were when they left their country of origin. The only ones we see with those markings are the ones that come in from the USA. We get or Mosin's, SKS's and Svt-40's straight out of the grates as they left the Ukraine warehouse, I know because I have been at a importers warehouse when they came in right off the ship in the same container from the Ukraine and they opened one of the grates right in front of me, everything was wrapped in grease paper with a sheet of paper on top in Russian dated from the 1980's with all the serial numbers of the rifles inside listed, even the cleaning kits, bayonets and slings are individually wrapped. Most of my Mosin's I have bought have had bayonets matching serial numbers to the rifle because of this.

You know what! I can't even tell it was relined, however they did it, it is seamless. Muzzle looks normal, no ring, same at the breech, if you guys had not told me I would not believe it was fitted with a barrel liner. Bore is perfect and like new, so I think it is safe to shoot.
