Tigerstriped Sako M39 Straight Stock w/ heavy use

Post by airbornetrooper »

1941 Sako straight stock with nice striping. This rifle has to be one of the most attractive in my entire collection. The rear half exhibits a beautiful pattern. The rifle also has the correct straight stock for the serial range. Well almost... According to mosinnagant.net:

"There is mention that 6,200 stocks were fit to rifles leaving the remaining 800 in inventory for later use explaining the wonderful condition of some of the straight stocks used on rifles outside of the correct date range of 1941."

Well let's just say that range extended to 206201. Anyways, the rifle displays strange pitting that other collectors have referred to as "blood rust" at times. Perhaps someone could chime in on this one.

Enjoy.

Matt

Well Matt, that range of 6,200 is wrong. That webpage you got that off needs to be updated. I have talked to Vic (owner of that site) and he is in agreement that the original theories that the proper straight stocks are on 1941 with a serial number lower then 6200. that is incorrect. Take a look here ....... http://www.russian-mosin-nagant-forum.c ... 66&t=14296

It clearly shows rifles with numbers as high as 208,000 were issued in straight stocks also. In fact, if it is like PL marked rifles of the same year, then there was no "order" they put them on at all. Just how they came out of the boxes and assembled in the armories. PL marked rifles are all over the serial range showing they did not build these rifles is strict serial number order. So the first 6,200 rifles did not all have straight stocks. Many of them had pistol grips and some of the rifle (especially to 208,00) had straight stocks also.

I need to update that list also. I have many more over the 6,200 mark of the "original theory".

So You rifle is clearly in the proper serial number range for a straight stock.

Nice rifle too! I like the stripes, for some reason, that caught my eye! ;mywink;

Great Stock! Blood pitting, aka, bloodwash. I see some damage to the wood could be from fragmentation or shrapnel damage. Soldier could have been injured or worse therefor possible bloodwash.

Matt, you hit a homerun on this one. It has the best of both worlds. Military, and good looks. Wow this puts the military in military surplus. Then there is that straight stock. Thank you for sharing. I would be so proud to own this one. :P

Dolk,

How would I have guess you would have something to say about the stripes ;-) On a more serious note, thank you for posting the link to the thread with the stock data. 1941 must have been a chaotic time at Sako. Both the straight stocks and the PL marking appear to have been applied with rhyme or reason somewhere along the line...

VERY nice rifle. Send the rifle to Las Vegas. They can swab the rifle, the blood dust, and have the identity of who the blood came from in about sixty minutes. Give or take a few for commercials.
