None taken. If I had it to do over again I would have bought it again in a heartbeat. Back then, I was broke, newly married with two infant kids & going to school. I had to sell my 68 Impala SS to pay for bills & I used some of those proceeds to buy the Taurus right when I turned 21. I looked at the Smiths & Rugers & it would have ate up way more of my funds... So I had to settle. But after a few thousand rounds it still shoots great & looks as good as the day I bought it. I have no regrets.sheepdog wrote:No disrespect to the Taurus owners but it doesn't have "Made in the U.S.A." written on it.
A strange thing to write on a Russian gun board.

Pinned and recessed to boot. Excellent choice, the 19 and the 66 are perhaps the finest revolvers ever made. avenger, you are a year and a half away from buying one from anyone, 21 is a Federal age limit. You can vote in presidential elections, get married and have some kids, fight and die for your country, but no handguns until you are 21. Just think Audie Murphy was still under 21 when he became a medal of Honor recipient on top of all the rest of his decorations.

Make sure to check your state and local laws as well as confirm with the BATFE website as to age requirements. Wiki is very useful and informative but for any information that might get you in trouble with the law always trust, but verify from official sources. I had handguns and long guns long before I was 21, but that was a much more informal time.

No spite detected, you could well be right as I don't keep current on that part of the gun laws, unfortunately I no longer need to
Just don't trust everything you read in Wiki

Turns the wrong way? Over vaued? S&W K-frame? With out getting out the books the .357 to get is the ................ONE you like. My favorite? S&W M-28 (N-Frame) with a 6 inch tube. My hands are big enough to hold onto it, my gunsmith 'tuned' it so it's got a decent action (A lot of cylinder to turn) and it's not so "pretty" that when you have to smack somebody with it that it's "ruined" It will also hold up to the full power loads until the throat is shot out.sheepdog wrote:Pinned and recessed to boot. As a more practical one S&W M-581 or 586 (6 shot) Bigger frame (L) than a K-frame but the same action. Reason I'm not crazy about K-Frames? Eventually it will shoot "loose" and the guys that REALLY know how to work on them are getting to be fewer and fewer.
Now if you win "powerball" get a KORTH

The "K" frame has been called the classic revolver of the 20th century. I do believe that the S&W Military and Police, was rated #2 handgun of all time behind the 1911 by American Rifleman. Mark Keefe of American Rifleman says of the original K Frame the Military & Police – "The Model 10 or Military & Police remains to this day the epitome of what a double-action revolver could and should be – they may be different, but they can't be better. In commercial blue for lawmen and civilians or Parkerized for the military, the M&P has "been there and done that" all over the world. It is the basis of all modern Smiths. None other than Retired Assistant Chief Patrol Inspector of the U.S. Border Patrol, famous gun fighter, and noted firearms and shooting skills writer Bill Jordan consulted with Smith & Wesson on the design and characteristics of the Model 19. Jordan's idea for a "peace officer's dream"[1] sidearm was a heavy-barreled four-inch K-Frame .357 Magnum with a shrouded barrel like the big N-frame .357 and adjustable sights. After a year of experimentation with improved-strength steels and special heat-treat processes, the result was the .357 Combat Magnum (later designated Model 19).Ironnewt wrote:Turns the wrong way? Why pay $1200 for a Python whose trigger and accuracy may just be equal to that of the K frame? Why pay for one Korth when you could buy 3 Model 19s and 3 model 66s for the same price?
There are plenty of folks at the S&W forum with over 20,000 rounds through their K frame magnums. Granted an N frame Smith is a crown jewel too, but I'll give the ease of carry and the better trigger to the K frame.
I just love K frames.

Don't get me wrong, I love them too. First K-Frame I started carrying was a M-10 in 1973, then a M-64 when the Department took my M-10 back (a sad day) some time around 1984 and then a Glock 17 in 1991. I've got 2 L-frames and at least 4 K's and no Python's (sold it to buy a Giles .45 aand some other stuff). That old N frame is gone too and I'm not happy about that at all. Even with S&W paying attention (or was it lip service) to Bill Jordan, the K's shoot loose being fed a strict diet of full bore .357. That's why the L's were eventually brought out.

Re: Best 357 to get.
I believe the majority of 357 pistoleros shoot mostly 38 special for just fun, plinking or shooting tincans and 357 for business and after reading my first post I did say get a Ruger like an old Security Six if he wanted one built like a tank. Since the OP said value and price was a consideration aren't most old K frames usually priced better than an L or N frame also. Last lugging an N frame around for carry would be similar to carrying a B.A.R. as compared to a Garand. Both shoot the same round.

I would shoot it all the time but for the cost.
