Another question for the fisherman

Post by ponycarman »

I have been wanting to get a lighter rod and reel for a little bit to try of other types of fishing. I figured it would be usefull on smaller lures but able to take normal sized fish if I am patient and wear them out. I picked up a shimano sonora 1000 reel the other day on sale. Same reel I have been using on my larger medium ugly stik with good success.

Anyone use light or lighter rod and reel? What rod would you recommend? I got the reel for $30 so I'm not really wanting to put $100 into a rod but I don't mind spending a bit more for better quality. Thanks Yall

I use a Shimano Spirex 1000 on a 7ft light action Berkeley rod. I bank fish and wade creeks mostly. I have caught everything from bluegill to a 15lb carp with this rig, using 6-8 lb test line.

I went and looked, and the Spirex 1000 is actually on a Shakespeare MicroGraphite 7 ft light action. (Wally world and cheap) but a great rod. The Berkeley is a Cherrywood 7 foot Med action. I have a Shimano Syncopate 2000 on it. Check the Shakespeare rod out. Don't let the price fool you. I have been pleased with mine.

Here is a good website Mr Crappie Wally Marshall.

I have seen him give 2 seminars in the last 3 months.

I bought a couple of his 6' signature series spinning rods and I really like them for my bank and river fishing I caught a 3 lb smallmouth on it a couple of weeks ago---

Here is a link to his website it is really good site

Thanks for the info guys. Next time I'm at walmart or academy I'll take a look at their rods.

Dropped by wally world. They had three light power rods on the shelf .

Shakespeare micrographite $16.97
Berkley cherrywood $22.96
Abu garcia vigilante $36.96

The cherrywood looked to be a little on the ultralight side. Super thin and flimsy. The Shakespeare felt nice . They had it is 5'6" and 6'6". The 6 foot model looked really nice. A little more beefy toward the grip but flexible toward the tip. I don't really know much about the abu garcia but it felt very similar to the shakespear. Just a little more fancy looking. Not sure if it is worth double the price though.

Gonna check at academy tonight. Also wally world had bunches of lures on sale for 1-1.50. Picked up a few. Not sure exactly how good they are but I guess its just trial and error haha.

Picked up a 6'6" shakespeare micro graphite today. Thanks for the info millman! It feels great and quality looks pretty good. Its cheap enough to replace easily if it ever does break.

That was my reasoning as well.

I am very new to fishing with lures. Alwayed bobber and a worm. What sorta lures are all around good to use? I'm wanting to try some different fishing styles. Kinda mix it up. My grandfather gave me two tackle boxes full of stuff last year. Full of all different lures, spinners, jigs, ect. It is all vintage but I figure it should still work. Also wally world has boxes of lures on sale. Been grabbing a few every now and then.

It depends on what you are fishing for. I usually fish small rivers and streams for Smallmouth and Kentucky (spotted) bass, I find that Mepps and rooster tail spinners, and small crankbaits work well. I sometimes fish for trout, and I use a piece of nightcrawler with small splitshot about a foot or so up the line, and just let it drift down through the riffles.
Happy fishing.

Look in grandpa's tackle box and see if he has any Rapala plugs. If he doesn't, go buy you a couple. Silver belly, black back. A small to medium one, and a larger one. They're sorta pricy nowadays, but you're buying the best. Another good use-anywhere sorta lure are rubber bodied jigs with "safety pin" spinners. Fairly snagless. Have fun.

Thanks. I'll give it a look again tomorrow. I'm sure there is something in there haha. There are tons of lures in there. Some still in the boxes. Tons of the safty pin spinners you spoke of. And lot of the solid lures. I'll have to take some pics to see if anyone can identify some of the lures. He gave me to large tackle boxes full of stuff. One I believe was his the other belonged to an old fishing partner that gave him his stuff years before I was born.

+1 on the Rapalas. They are great. Plus they are from Finland. At least the older ones were. I think the last few I bought were made in Ireland.

There may be some. I do recall seeing a few stamped finland on the underside of the lures.

Watch this video on how to shoot it will help a lot when you are in tight places like creeks and when you want to get in small places and under trees etc.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=p ... aqw2mvnx_A

And learn to tie this knot for your jigs.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YwymO4edAOE

Also when I get my camera back from my daughter. I will put some pics of all the baits you will need to catch any type fish that swims in South Carolina freshwater.

I saw the pics of you tackle box your grandpa had some good stuff  but the plugs and diving baits just will not work if you are bank fishing and not in a boat.

I have caught 1000's of fish crappie--black perch--smallmouth--largemouth--shellcrackers etc on the Tennessee river and ponds and creeks in my area on just a small assortment of 1/32nd 1/16th and 1/8th jigs using plastic curly tail grubs and plastic tube baits.Using basics colors green/flourscent--Black and Red and Brown and white

You do not have to spend a lot of money on baits it is all technique.

Also the Rooster tails you got are super baits!!

Sweet! Thanks for the info. I'm not at all experienced with any artificial lures of any kind. Pretty much have only fished for catfish. Haven't been extremely successful really. Had a few good days. I guess I'm just ready to try some new stuff. There are hundreds of jigs in the tackle my grandfather gave me. All colors, shapes, and sizes.

Would love to get a boat of some kind someday. Nothing big. Maybe even just a conoe. That will come in time. Right now I'm limited to fishing from the bank or docks.

Tennessee's giving you good advice. Main thing is, just get out there and try to catch fish. Sooner or later, the stars and the sun and the moon will all line up right, and you'll catch 'em. A bunch of them. I fished for six hours today, never got a bite. Then, right before sunset, someone threw a switch. Loaded up on trout and channel cats, both. Was ready to give up before that. Glad I didn't.
