Picked up a M38 today!

Post by markophonic »

I had my eye on a Polish M44 for the last couple months and decided that I wanted it. Went to the LGS and found that it had been sold :b sad:

They had another one but it was nowhere near as nice as the other. The one I wanted was in pristine condition with a beautiful stock and near perfect in every way. The one they have the numbers don't match and it is in a Hungarian stock...

I also had my eye on this M38. There were about 30 or so that I looked at but this one just spoke to me.

1943 Izhevsk with a wartime stock...an M38 stock, not the typical M44 stock. It has several repairs that just make it look cool.. All of the others had M44 stocks and were very dark in coloring...this is lighter in color, the upper handguard is lighter in color and doesn't match the stocks finish but everything just felt good in my hands and just has a lot of character...So I brought it home.

:D

Excuse the crappy cell phone pics.

I agree. That's why I like this so much. The pic's don't do the quality of the woodwork justice.

I don't think I've seen a cross bolt and repairs like that one. Pretty cool.

Balkan style repairs on a Soviet refurb stock, interesting, nice find . Were is the import mark on that rifle?
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

Here are a few more pic's.

I need to give it a good cleaning. When I got it home I did run a couple buckets of boiling hot water through the barrel and ran a couple patches through it. I think the bore will clean up nicely.

Last night I took the bolt apart and cleaned it up.

Great find. That's an older RGuns import. I have a few from RGuns. Back in the day, they were importing some of the nicest Mosins available.

Plus it is a true M38 stock not a 44. Very cool. Now get out and shoot it.

I think you picked out the best one, from what you are saying. Those repairs are gorgeous. Makes me wonder how much damage to a stock is too much damage to repair. They must have spent a great deal of time repairing this one. Maybe not.

That is definitely a showcase for someone's stock repair talent. I bet the guy who did the repair was very proud of his work. :vcool: :vcool: :vcool: Come to think of it, he probably had some un-appreciative superior barking at him all the while "Stocks don't grow on trees!! Fix it or die!!!" At least that is how I envision commie state arsenal workers. I could be wrong.
