Rust Removal Solution?

Post by mosinsky »

I finally had a chance to remove the action of my latest acquisition - a 1925 Tula 5-Line and found that there was a quite a bit of rust under the barrel, on the top of the magazine/trigger guard, and the front hand guard retaining ring. Are there suggestions on a suitable removal procedure for rust on our Mosins?

copper /bronze bore brush ( never use a steel brush) pour oil on the rust, and scrub it with the brush. The oil will turn orange, wipe it away and apply more oil and scrub until the rust is out of the pits.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.
Don't hit at all if it is honorably possible to avoid hitting; but never hit soft.

It's amazing stuff but will not get into deeper pits but what rust it comes in contact with is removed and the bluing is saved. Useful to wrap strands around a bore brush to remove rust in a bore. Also the strands work great to tighten up lose front sights. My bag is never further than arms reach. But with everything "rust" you should have available additional alternatives. :D
