Dragoon?

Post by befus »

I came across a rifle at a local flea market/gun trading venue yesterday. It was rough, but not terrible. It was very dirty, had a dark patina all over, obviously had not seen any use in many years and was missing the handguard. Standard, up-dated rear sight. Dated 1934 it appeared to me to have the later, taller transitional Dragoon blade front sight which appeared to be in the same shape as the rest of the rifle. Upon further inspection the tang date is 1933. This would be right at the very end of the use of these sights, as I understand it, but I wonder if it could actually be a Dragoon? I got it on the cheap, so it is not going to kill me, but obviously I'd like to think it might be. Opinions?

Probably an earlier 91/30 given the standard rear sight with the blade front. Is it SA marked?

I am not to sue that is a transitional front sight, both of mine have a step in them and this one don't. If the rifle is SCW it could be a spanish mfg replacement

33 Izhevsk Transational front sight.

what is the measurement from the end of the barrel to the end of the fore end. Dragoons are a bit longer here than a 91/30.

On the road, but I can say that the handguard I put on it once I got it home did not line up exactly. More later.

MT's looks like the front sight on my 1933 Tula, which I know by looking at the rear sight is not an ex-Dragoon.

I have a 1931 dated ex-Dragoon, and I've heard of 1932s, but a 1933 would be quite a find.

Why would you want your money back? I'd be glad to help you make a profit on this one so you could buy another.

I agree, a SCW 91/30, a little too late for a dragoon.

Transitinal front sights where used on 91/30's from 1930 until mid 1934 when the Russians adopted the globe front sight. The only transitional front sighted rifles you will find will either be SCW's or Finn Captures since the Russians updated all in there stocks to the globe front sights during the rifles refurb.

The idea that it was made in spain is an interesting idea. The Spanish were known not to like the post and globe sights.
