Black paint and one other question.

Post by macruadhi »

Was it typical for the Russians to dab these rifles with black paint to touch up bluing imperfections? As I cleaned up my "new" '43 Izhevsk, I noticed flecks of paint coming off here and there. And, is using white paint/nail polish on the rear sight graduations considered modification?

That is completely normal. The paint on the sight is not a permanent mod. Try filling the markings with white crayon, instead of paint.
“Freedom is the right to tell people what they do not want to hear.” George Orwell, English novelist, essayist, and critic, 1903-1950

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

If you feel you still must use paint try using the water based florescent type. It comes off with a wet rag and leaves no spots or anything. I find I have to use it on the rear sight of an M39 to pick up the notch. Bill :o

tire marking crayon, you can get them at the auto part store, or google National Automotive lines Inc.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

What was that dog? I didn't hear you

I don't know why you would want to paint the gradients of the rear sight :?: If you decide to do that, then just use something that will easily come off like crayon. JYD did a video on that once but he's more partial to yellow... :D

Yes it was and they also did it to the SKS's that we see up here in Canada. You will find it in any place that had rust forming in small areas that they cleaned the rust off but was small enough that they did not want to re-blue the whole gun, I have often found it under the wood.
