Restoration Project Marlin Model 1892 .22 Lever Action

Post by Marcus »

MARLIN MODEL 1892 .22 LEVER ACTION RIFLE, MADE IN 1897.

I picked this one up many years ago with the intent of restoring it, but have so many other projects that it was low priority and kind of got stuck in the back of the gun room and forgotten about. While going through the vault a few weeks ago looking to see which rifles I might still keep a little while longer and which I would put up for sale to help fund my dog rescue/shelter/sanctuary, I came across it and decided it's time to list it for sale so some other fortunate collector could add it to his collection and return it to complete and functioning condition.

It needs the magazine tube assembly, the fore-end, and some of the internal parts for the cartridge lifter assembly. There were several following models of this one, including the M39, that are basically the same rifle with small changes or upgrades, so parts from those might work also. Numrich Gun Parts has some of the parts, and others come up for sale occasionally on Ebay or Gunbroker. A couple weeks ago there was a nice original fore-end for sale on Ebay - I haven't checked to see if it sold yet.

Many years ago I had a couple other Marlin lever.22's - a Model 39 and a Model 39A Golden - that unfortunately were stolen from me. They were top-quality, smooth handling, extremely accurate little rifles and remain - along with my 2 original Armalite AR-7's - among my favorite .22 rifles. Properly restored, this one should also be sweet, sweet, sweet.

Anyhow, it's a very cool looking and historic little "Wild West" era rifle - the Model 1892 was among the various firearms used by famous sharpshooter Annie Oakley - so I thought I'd memorialize it here for those who appreciate classic American firearms from a period when guns were a necessary and accepted part of everyday life, like any other quality tool.

Very cool. I got a 39a for my 13th B-Day. Marlin levers are the best.

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

Awesome! Looks to be a fun project. Not too bad of shape for its age. I also have a model 39. Its my favorite .22
Let me make a short, open, blanket comment. There are no good guns. There are no bad guns. Any gun in the hands of a bad man is a bad thing. Any gun in the hands of a descent person is no threat to anyone--- except bad people. -- Charleton Heston

Guns are not good, they are not evil. Save those descriptions for the people holding the firearm. -- Unknown

Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

Looking at Gunbroker prices, they seem to start off at around $700 for a functional beater and range up to around $1,200 for a decent shooter. Really clean, nice, original ones go for more of course.

I have mine listed for sale for $350 + shipping....if anyone here wants to take in this little rifle and restore it back to original, I'll offer it to members of this site for $300 + shipping. Remember, it's a legal antique, so it can be shipped direct with no FFL nonsense or even need for a C&R.

That sounds fair Marcus. I wish I had some spare cash right now. This rifle has lived in 3 milleniums and Walmart still carris ammo! ( on a good day) :P
