How many lock your ammo up versus leave it in the open?
I know this subject gets talked about a lot, but I'm curious as to what some of you have to say on it.
As my ammo stores continue to grow I'm faced with a dilemma of to either secure it, and if I do, how, or decide if it's not worth doing so and simply put it in ammo cans and put it all on metal shelves. Currently, I have a lot it in my safe, but I now need the room since my collection is growing. That, and I don't want that much ammo in the same in case of a fire as it could ruin the guns if it goes off.
The rest is in ammo cans that are here and there, but there's quite a bit of money tied up in the ammo so I'm hesitant to leave it all exposed. I live in a safe neighborhood so the risk of something happening is low, but if there were a fire how much will an ammo can protect the ammo?
I'd rather not buy a safe simply to put ammo in and metal storage cabinets are almost as expensive as an entry level safe. I could put my ammo in a older metal cabinet, but it wouldn't offer much in the way of security as the doors are pretty flimsy. Best I could do is put a chain around it, but even then, I'd need a few of them.
How do you all store your ammo? Do you have it in a lockable cabinet, a dedicated safe, or just put it on a shelf and leave it?

Everything I own is locked up, and covered by security systems, video cameras, and me.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

If you think there is a chance that some unauthorized person may get to your guns or ammo, you had best lock them up. Common sense.

my ammo is stacked in crates and ammo cans. I keep the ammo calibers together and labeled.
My modern rifles and pistols live in a safe but my surplus firearms live in crates, work benches and corners.

In this day and age there's always a chance of getting robbed. It's unlikely where I live, but it's foolish to not try and protect what you have. Keeping firearms in a safe is common sense, but I read where a lot of people don't take the same precautions with their ammo. Given it's value these days it only makes sense to try and protect it, too, but I'm curious as to how members here store theirs.millman wrote:If you think there is a chance that some unauthorized person may get to your guns or ammo, you had best lock them up. I'll also be looking into a security system sometime in the near future so any thoughts on what you all use would be appreciated.

I have some here and some there. 1) Be sure to smile for the camera if want any of it. 2) If I happen to be home or I find you in the house you are going to have a bunch of relatives saying how natural you look in that box.

Mine is locked in a Stack-On cabinet. $100 bucks. Worth it.

Brother, I think you answered your own question. Lock it. Best of luck.TheMaineEvent wrote:In this day and age there's always a chance of getting robbed. I live in a safe neighbourhood, the chances of anything happening around here are slim.
Last July I was burgled.
Some of my ammo is now in a dedicated gun safe, the bulk of it is hidden in places I won't mention here, if you want to know where burglars don't look PM me. Like JYD, I also have cameras and an alarm system, to me the ammo is as valuable as the guns, protect it.

Mine for the most part is locked in an old fridge in the basement. The loaded AR mags are in the upstairs gun cabinet with the AR's...
Re: How many lock your ammo up versus leave it in the open?
90% of mine is in the gun safe. The rest, mostly handgun ammo, is locked in cabinets in the shop where I reload.

Good replies by all. While I realize everyone's situation can be different getting input from others can help when making your decision as to what to do. I don't know as I'll buy another safe just for my ammo, but I'm going to look into something that can be locked.

I built my steel locker for my "loose" ammo. My "bulk" ammo (still in original containers) is in a "Job Box" that got tossed out at work. I worked it over and saved it.
They are in a completely different part of the house from the firearms.

Re: How many lock your ammo up versus leave it in the open?
all my ammo is in spam cans, so I use them to set plants on. Our bed is set on them. I use a couple for steps too. My front door locks!!
Actually I've been thinking about just this thing in fact. I got a safe for my rifles. Maybe it's in the apartment? Maybe it isn't? It is how ever full and getting fuller. No room for ammo in it at all. I can make a lock box for it or something. Just to feel more safe. My apartment is very high profile. The parrots in my dining room attract a lot of attention. Living on the second floor adds a touch to security. As I work for the company that owns the property I live at, I am watched. lol

I have a sign on my front lawn that says "free ammo". So far, nobody has looked for it
