What do you guys carry to gun shops and shows?

Post by tide72 »

Do you carry a bore light and headspace gauge? I usually do but don't find my main local gun store very eager to cut the cable tie on the bolt so I can examine the bore and bolt. What are your experiences along that line?

Simple. Do they want a chance at my money or not?

That being said, I let it be known that I'm a serious buyer/collector. I think experienced sellers can pick up on that.

And if I am shown courtesy, I always take a business card. If none are out, I ask for one.

I have a list of all the small parts and accessories I'm looking for that I always keep in my back pack, some things can take years to find so I forget what I need at times. Any trading stuff to keep cash output to a minimum for buying odds and ends. I also keep a few small pocket references for dating firearms with serial numbers handy.

Bore light, camera/phone/tablet with bookmarks to this Forum and other reference sources like 7.62x54r.net, in case I need to post photos and ask questions. I don't find bolts zip-tied at my stores. Might make sense to bring snips and zip ties, so you can replace any you may have to cut for inspection. As djbuck1 states, if they know you are a serious buyer, and you break out your light, gauges, camera, references and maybe even new cable ties, I would expect them to acquiesce.

Poker face, I don't care if they pull out a 1907 carbine with a $120 price tag on it, I might even yawn while examining it.

I carry a bore light, my lighted magnifying glass (shows are always so dark that I can't even read the shanks), my glasses, 3 or 4 copies of my C&R in case I run into dealers, sometimes a dummy round, sometimes a no go gauge and a wad of cash. The same wad of cash from a year ago when was the last time our shows had anything worth buying :x

Money, maybe a bore light and a list of things I am looking for. I never take a head space gauge because I don't buy milsurps with the expectation they are shootable. Firing one is a bonus for me.

Lots of patience for the tire kickers, touchy feely types and the ones standing in the way just talking to hear their jaws flop.

Other than patience, C&R copy, bore light, 2 or more state I.D.s, what ever she money I've scrounged up. She money= money "she" didn't know about.

She Money :chuckles: :chuckles:

I always have that look of "Yeah Right" just available under the surface and can switch it on in a second. I also have an attitude of, the guy ahead of me has his chance, when he's done it's my chance. Puh-Leeze don't interrupt my conversation with the dealer or attempt to interfer with my haggling over a price or be prepared to incur my wrath. There has been more than one "gun show manners" thread , just use plain old common sense when some one else is doing something. wait your turn.
Damn, I'll bet that's going to leave a mark! Probably hurt too!

Everything but the kitchen sink is out in the car or truck but all I carry into the show is money in any form I think they might except. Bill :D

With that wagon you have room for Okie gauges and Oreo Cookies for an emergency snack. :vcool:

Bore light or small flashlight, Okie headspace gauge and as much money as I can spare (which ain't much). If the dealer won't cut the cable I leave and assume there must be a good reason he doesn't want me to take a close look.
