New Bolt Head

Post by Kristie »

All right guys, I have finally come to the point where I'm through fiddling with trying to fix whatever is wrong with this Mosin, causing the bolt to not close properly on rounds, and I'm just going to order a new bolt head. So I'm looking for suggestions on where would go a good place to get one. I know I could have just Googled it, but knew recommendations from here would be better.

Numrich is out. You think I should bother Junk Yard Dog? I figure he needs his spare parts, he has so many Mosins, but maybe I'll give him a holler.

Okay, as much as I didn't want to, I'm going to take a chance on an Ebay one. At least that way, I can be sure I'm getting one from the correct armory, to match the rest of my gun. Thanks for your help, guys!

I wouldn't do that. His name should say everything.

You'll have to hope it works; they aren't numbered like Enfield bolt heads, according to wear. It might take a few to find the right one.

Really? I never heard that. I thought it was a simple fix.

I do have spare bolt heads, I have them for a reason, so I can correct headspace issues. It wouldn't matter if I would sell you one or not, I don't remember where I put them and haven't seen them since 2008 or so when last I had a headspace issue to deal with. They are probably decorating the mouse palace back at my old place. You should be able to find a bolt head on ebay, if not this week then next, same for gunbroker.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

Well, it is-if it fixes the headspace issue. And it probably will. Ususally it's harder to fix the other problem-excessive headspace-with the first one you try. But it is a possibility it won't, and unlike the Enfield bolt heads, there's no reference point; you just have to try it. Hope yours fixes it the first time.

Well, that's very interesting. There appears to have been a run on bolt heads. I know a guy who might have some. I'll let you know.

I did end up ordering an ebay one. We'll see how it works out.

Thanks, Junk Yard Dog, no worries!

Entropy, I don't know that it is a headspace issue. The gauge said it was okay, and I've shot it a lot, so I hope I haven't been shooting it and it's not safe! The bolt closes on some of the rounds with no effort at all! I'm sick of trying to figure it out. Been messing with it for 6 months.

My M27 wouldn't close on any round until I unstuck the extractor spring. There was a burr holding down the spring. So that would be the first place I would look again. I had to sand off a burr with 400 grit sandpaper then lube the extractor before I could chamber a round. Everything works fine now that it's had a chance to work.
