Good Deal or Not... 1917 Remington
Good Deal or Not... 1917 Remington
Local gun shop has a 1917 dated Remington with all mismatched numbers and mild to moderate pitting. It has some Russian markings as well including the imperial arms so probably placed into service in Russian army prior to their surrender in 1917. The asking price is $279... seems high to me but what say ye??

Forgot to add they also have two or three snipers with scopes at $599... is that reasonable?

Ye say maybe! It depends on the overall condition and how bad you want one. Handguard? Cleaning rod? I haven't seen too many m91s in any shape for under $250 let alone a Remington. Yes $599 for a REAL sniper is very reasonable but that sounds in the typical price range for the plentiful put-together snipers. I'll let the experts explain the snipers more in depth.

The Russian army didn't surrender, they signed papers with the Germans to end their involvement with the war. While this was going on the army was also splitting in two, one side Red, the other White and they would battle on until the early 1920's. Later many of these M91's ended up in either Spain, or the Balkans as Soviet military aid. Search the board for other M91's, familiarize yourself with what an original M91 looks like, the showcase is a good place to do this. Without detailed photos I can't say what you have, if it at least looks original then it's worth what they are asking. It's a typical price for a Balkan used M91.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

If it is complete with Hand-guard, Barrel Bands, cleaning rod & sling it would be well worth considering. If it is missing cleaning rod not too bad.... missing a handguard price goes down. Offer $225 or maybe $250... all they can do is say no.

I would agree with Rongo. Sounds like a SCW but we are all guessing unless fotos are posted.

Very Good Deal

Not horrible, but not a steal considering what you are describing. If you don't have a remington, I would probably negotiate for it with the person. Like was said above, make an offer, the worst they can do is turn you down.
