Sierra Match Kings, if you can find them.

Hornady doesn't make any .311 bullets I don't think. Did you go with the .308 bullets?

Graf & Sons has Prvi Partizan 150gr. .311 dia. for $25.99 per 100. I've shot a few of them and they seem to perform as well as the Hornady and Speer 150gr.

I've been using these with good results in 7.62x54r, .303 British and 7.7 Jap. Unfortunately, Hornady has temporarily suspended production.

Re: Need bullet suggestion for reloading 7.62x54
I suggest you consider what range you will be shooting at and pick your bullet weight accordingly. The history of 7.62x54 cartridge development shows the lighter 147-150gr bullets were accurate at shorter ranges but couldn't "reach out and touch someone" at longer ranges so they developed the heavier 182gr boat tail bullets. These work better at longer ranges. It's simple ballistics. So if you are planning on shooting at ranges less than 200 yards the lighter bullets should shoot accurately. This could save you some money which would allow you to buy more Mosin! If you plan on shooting at 200 yards or more then the heavier bullets should serve you better.speedneo wrote:I am starting reload for my Mosin. Would like suggestion for bullet purchase.

Yep. Flat bottom at closer range and boat tail for distance.

Re: Need bullet suggestion for reloading 7.62x54
I load mainly for .308 bores and very few .310+, so my experience may not help too much. I have tried everything from 100 to 200 and had some varied results, good and bad. I ended up settling on 155 grain bullets similar to a palma match bullet. I use these to shoot 2 matches per month, 1 at 200 yds and one at 500 meters.
I have tried the d-166 bullets and can't seem to find a load that works well, so far. I'm not ready to give up, but so far it hasn't worked :/
If you can find the 123gr bullets from lapua, those have been working very well, and they are available in both .308 and .311

Have you considered using a hard cast bullet after slugging the barrel? If the bore is "dark" you are going to have leading, but in my experience lead is easier to get out than copper.
Damn, I'll bet that's going to leave a mark! Probably hurt too!

I am working with two powders ( BL-C2 & H4895) and am using for the time being collet pulled .311 Brit heads. These weigh in +/- 148 and fly good at 100 yards. Still working on powder, right now using 47 grns H4895. Got to get some 10 inch 'shoot-n-see' bull eyes to work on groups this coming week.

Topper, where did you find those pulled British bullets?
Re: Need bullet suggestion for reloading 7.62x54
Gunbroker, I just this AM got another 250 for $60.00 + shipping. These heads load nicely and shoot great.
As I am in the "Dumocratic Kennedy Republic of Massachusetts" its difficult at times to get reloading stuff sent directly........also few if any gun shops carry 7.62x54R reloading components.
The best I have found are the "Parvi Partizan" but they tend to be a tad bit expensive for regular shooting, thus the pulled .303 Brit heads......my range will NOT let me shoot tracers, but if it did....hehehehehe, some nifty .311 stuff out there as well.

123 gr. AK/SKS bullets work fine for short range plinking, are not very expensive, and can occasionally still be found. Try 33.6 gr. of IMR 4064 with the Remington 125 gr. AK bullet; I loaded these for plinkers when my sons were young, though I needn't have bothered. Skipper was shooting Czech silvertip at age ten, and he'd shoot about 50 per range session. They do make excellent rounds for easing new shooters into the Mosin, for between the Czech "white tip" (46 gr. ) round, and silvertip.
