Possible 91/30 SCW, opinions

Post by jdolinski »

I found a couple Mosins I am looking at buying, one has the look of an SCW 91/30 but not sure. please let me know what you think.
it has rear screw in escutcheons but the front looks like press in hard to tell from picture is that something seen on the SCW's.
The stock has the look but again not sure. end caps look like brass, it is a 1936 Tula and the serial number appears to be in the range of the examples I can find.

That is a tough call there. It only falls in the range if they include the hexs or maybe I read it wrong. It has the metal finish of a scw but the stock is in better condition maybe. Hard to tell from the fotos. I am gonna go ahead and assume the owner put the sling and dog collars on it?

Could be, could also be a Balkan used rifle.

It falls outside the listed serial number range for 1936 Izhevsk, they are all in the 100-200K range. No other marking or features scream either way if it is, or isn't.

It is a nice clean looking 91/30 and if the price is right then I'd get it after checking it out in a ftf transaction.

It definitely has the look of an SCW. Missing cleaning rod, mix master SN's, some sanding on the stock would maybe be expected. BTW, I've got a genuine SCW with a very nice stock, only lightly sanded.

I would expect screw-in escutcheons front and rear though. Could just be a bad photo, but without clearer pix, I'm suspicious. You don't see pressed in escutcheons until what? '43, maybe '44? And I too am disregarding the sling and dog collars.

Well I picked up the 91/30 today, it is a mismatch, the receiver and floor plate match and the bolt and butt plate do not.
I can not find an import mark any where. nothing on the receiver as well as the barrel. The end caps look to be copper.
the stock is in great condition, if this was refinished it was a long time ago.

Some aren't sanded much if any. This is my 37 SCW with Made in USSR and Made in URRS marks.

Being as it is non-Russian refurb ( rear sight base) non-import marked ( pre-1968) and is the correct date I would say there is a strong possibility of it being a SCW 91/30, but there is nothing definative to prove it from what I have seen. But it is still a very nice rifle and would go nicely in anyones collection.

Nice looking original rifle.

I think I see something on the right side of the rear sight base, take a close look and see what it is.

I'll say this: The majority of serial numbers I've collected from that range are either confirmed SCW rifles or non refurbed rifles with a good possibility of being SCW. Worth picking up in any case! What is the complete serial number? I'm having trouble seeing it in the photos.

Was looking more closely at the bore tonight and it was pretty dirty. Began
cleaning and was surprised how well it cleaned up, its a little dark but I don't
see any pitting
Pretty happy with the rifle, just wish I knew for sure whether it is an
SCW or not. It sure has the look.

It's funny how lighting makes such a difference. The first pictures look more refinished, and the 2nd set of pictures, obviously at home after you bought it, look more non-refinished. I didn't think it was the same rifle at first. It does look nice.

Pictures can be so misleading. To me the first pic of the barrel shank looks like the SN in 425067.

Looks very SCWish to me.

SCW, anytime you see a 1936 or 1937 Mosin with a sanded stock and no import marks that is what your conclusion should be, never saw figures on how many were imported but it was in the thousands.

Based on the look and serial number I'd say SCW. It falls into the huge range of either SCW marked or non-refurbed probable SCW rifles.

Jim, have you had the butt plate off yet? On some there was an "M-18" stamped on the stock under the butt plate. What the heck, it's worth a peek :)

Removed the butt plate, nothing there. I feel strongly that it is SCW thought so from the first time I saw it.
