I am relieved to note I am not the only one who thought the way Longcolt did! My ex-wife stole the keys to the safes and took pictures in the middle of the night which ended up in court at the divorce hearings and tried to subpoena my logbook for the C&R I no longer had, Thanks Goodness! Good Buddy of mine just retired from the gun shop. ATF man came around wanting the book and he told him heck that was destroyed in the fire (which he did have and was the main reason he got out) ATF guy was quite upset and wanted a better answer. My buddy told him you got your answer and what are you going to threaten me with now loss of license? They had quite a confrontational relationship previously and then he told the agent he was on private property and he better leave. When he told me on the phone I about laughed my socks off. A lot, 25 years worth of 4473's went off the records there! Now I just have another gun buddy instead of a dealer friend and he is a great guy either way! Bill

Good for him, and all the 4473 forms, good riddance. Who started the fire? Mice with matches ?

BBT event this afternoon. Now the 6 hexes are sitting near the front door in 2 boxes. Will explore and report this weekend. These were some of the last from AIM. That has me kinda worried condition-wise. But the AIM rep told me that they sort out the "hand select" rifles beforehand. When one of these is ordered, they just grab from this group. Hoping this means I didn't get the dregs. Almost afraid to peak.

Here's a photo of the open end of the 2 boxes. I was told there were no more hand picked available so they refunded that price (AIM). Fair enough. Turns out there are 3 of the 6 that marked hand picked (checked one and it's cherry), and at least 2 of them that are Tula marked, and maybe a third. Will open further later this afternoon. All different years too.

Excellent example of how much AIM sorts these things. The best of 5 hand pick is BS, the boxes are pre marked hand picked meaning they are "hand picked" when they sort through the initial shipment.

All the rifles are unpacked. There was one rifle not marked a Tula on the label that actually was a Tula. So 3 of 6 are Tulas. The 3 hand picked rifles were the best. One rifle has some pitting on the barrel bands and the but plate (bands can be replaced but the butt plate matches). One rifle has a little older pitting on the metal piece on the barrel muzzle end of the hand guard.

All the bores look nice except for the rifle with the pitting on the barrel bands. This one looks a little dirty but will be able to tell more when I clean it.

They are all "all matching" rifles (no force matches on any parts). All came with bayonets and cleaning rod parts (including FP gauge and muzzle caps for protecting crown). Non are counterbored.

And non of these rifles are packed with cosmo (I know it's something we all love to deal with). Overall a good solid value for these hex rifles. I'll post some photos when I get them mustered together for closer inspection this week.

Interesting how they are now sorting these rifles.
Post up some pics when you can because I would like to see the difference between the handpick and non handpick.

Will do on the photos. From a few feet away they all look identical. Every rifle, even the 3 hand picks had some issues. The most common were pitted barrel bands (easy to replace with correct markings). 2 of them had pitting on butt plates (could replace but then would lose the match, so maybe replace for cosmetic reasons and save the butt plates for later use). One of them had a small amount of pitting right where the butt plate number is stamped, but still readily readable. A few also had some pitting on the metal on the front of the hand guards (replacements can be made for these).

So for about $60 I can replace all the pitted bands and a couple of hand guards if desired. Rather, I'll probably just protect from further pitting and maintain them "as is". I'm sure that better ones are out there, but overall these look nice, and not sure there is anything better on the way to our shores.

I would leave them. If you clean and oil them it's highly unlikely the exterior pitting will advance significantly in your lifetime.

Every single one of these rifles was inspected before it went into the crates at the Soviet facility. Some things do slip by, millions of weapons were being done, shit happens, but for the most part every refurb is a hand selected rifle. Very few will be truly bad in the crate.

The trusty coffee pot left on while empty and that started a towel and so on through the shop back room. Safe worked great and guns were fine inside of it. Just amazingly it took all the 4473's! Divine Providence? Bill :o

Here are the Photos. Apologize for the print on the chair... Notice that one of the stocks is actually about 3/8" longer than the others. Also notice photos of pitted bands, buttplates, and nosepieces. The wood is definitely in nice condition as is the bluing and finish of the main metal parts. One of them had the sight ladder numbers filled in in red (same with a few butt plate numbers too). There are small cartouches all over the wood.

Looks like I need 1 rear band and 3 front bands. Might also get 2 stock nose caps. Not going to bother with the butt plates since they are numbered.

Received the T53 today and will post photos of them as well in the T53 thread I started.

So the three "hand picked" rifles are the first three starting from the left I'm guessing?

They sent you some pretty nice rifles.
