Ammo Storage

Post by Marston »

New to the Mossin world and the forum. I have a 91/30 milsurp rifle + ammo 440rd case on its way to me. When I pick up everything from my FFL I will have the ammo case cut open enough to where I can access the bundles but how best to store them once home? Do you recommend any ammo storage boxes, and if so, which ones/size?

thank you

Welcome to the forum. Regarding the ammo ensure it is stored in a sealed, dry container like a 50 cal ammo can & keep it in a low humidity area at constant room temurature. Ensure you fully inspect, disassemble & clean the rifle too & clean the gun right after every range session.

Appreciate the response Rongo. Will a single 50cal can be enough to hold all 440rds? Any difference between the heavy ABS plastic deals and the metal versions? I've read some of the newer plastic ones have better air seals, but anything else I should be aware of?

I do believe you can get all of it in a 50 cal can, or 2 30 cal cans.

I leave ammo in the spam cans unless I need to shoot it, then I pack it into a USGI steel .50 ammo can.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

A single 50 cal ammo can will hold over 600 rounds if you leave them in the paper wraps (I forget the exact amount). Drop a couple packs of desiccant in the ammo can and your ammo will stay nice and dry.

Right, someone recently was selling them that way. 600 rounds in a USGI 50 can.

Are plastic Plano ammo boxes a problem?

I have a couple plastic ammo boxes from Cabelas. They seal just fine and even have the rubber seal under the lid. They are just not as strong as the metal boxes so be careful picking them up after you load them up.

The 30 Cal Plano plastic cans are pretty nice. I like them for range boxes, cleaning kit boxes, etc. throw them in the car seat and they are gentler on the interior than a steel can.
