I agree, I started collecting old military bolt actions a year ago and now own 12 of them with 6 more on the way. Been shooting 40+ years and I've fired off more rounds in the last 8 months then I have in my whole life. I just love the history behind them and wonder each time shooting what that old rifle's been through. Some I've taken out to find them lined in at 300 meters and others that are well worn are on the money at 100 yards being lined in by some young solider 70 to 100 years ago. I always feel those are the ones that have seen the elephant.kjohn wrote:"Sufficient?" I am still trying to figure out how that word even applies to buying guns and ammo. I am 66 and have been buying guns since my Dad bought me a new Cooey 39 when I was about 11 or 12.
I buy just whatever rings my bell, and buy ammo especially when it is on sale. I feel for you guys that have to suffer the ammo shortages. I often jokingly say that I have enough ammo in my magazine to hold off the Chinese Army for at least three months of heavy fighting.![]()
I lean mostly to nice old military rifles, but wander into .22's, shotguns, and so forth, on occasion. At this precise moment, I have a really nice old Model 50 Winchester 12ga. At my feet on the living room floor. To balance things out, I also bought a scrubbed and refurbed VZ24, complete with bayonet and scabbard. Some of those scruffy old Mosin Nagants have a wonderful trail attached to them. I don't necessarily get any thrill out of the sordid history of the wars they may have been used in, but I love to look at the stampings and review the written word regarding the various variants.
I enjoy my "old army rifles".

To attempt to answer the original question, I'm not sure if it's possible to own a firearm chambered for every caliber, but I'm trying too anyways

Well.... .22LR, .22WMR, 7.62x25, 7.62x39, 30/30, .303British, .308Winchester, 30.06Springfield, .45LC, .45ACP, .410, 12 gauge Just to start with. (Sadly, no Mosin as of yet - it is on the list!)
But when I head into the bush? .22LR for light game, 7.62x39 for wildlife defense, and either .303British or 30.06 Springfield for hunting is my usual loadout (we dont get to wear handguns for defense in Canada even in the bush.) Odds are, however, when I do get a Nagant itll supplement the .303 British in hunting.
All that said - As far as sufficient? Not for a while yet.

Can you use cap and ball black powder pistols? We used to have to use bp pistols during black powder hunting but there were a couple of incidents involving bears and they changed the rules. In camp though we could have what ever pistol.

You are in deeeeeeep-doda my friend! You are bit with the surps virus and there is no limit to the addiction! You will want to buy every surp you look at.So my suggestion is don't go lookin until you have a specific rifle in mind and the money to pay for it. Or you can do what i do and go broke and piss the wife off something bad! Good luck.............
Re: How many guns is sufficent? and how many calibers?
I went in a little overboard when I first got into guns. Having kids, a mortgage and getting older I consolidated down to a few calibers. Full power, I use only 54r and 7.62x51/.308. My Mausers are 7.62, my Mosins of course, 54r. Handguns are primarily 9mm and .45 although I have a .32, .25, and Tok. A few .22s. And my only medium power, 7.62x39. I have a .223/5.56 rifle, and while I believe it is a good round, I just never fell in love with it. Also went from 20G to a more common 12G. Liked the 20, but finding the ammo I needed was hard.

More than I need, but not as many as I want...
