I say do it , unless you either plan on dealing only over-the-counter at local shops and shows or you have a buddy with an FFL who will do transfers for free. Paying retail price for even one transfer will probably cost more than the $30 license.

Even buying over the counter at a dealer saves time and the NICS fee/call. No need to fill out the 4473, sign and hand over a copy of your C&R, they log that into their bound book, you get a receipt and leave with another surplus gun.

 Generally yes. But not all shops will do that. They are not educated in that FFL, and choose not to honor them. I had a shop today that would not take it. Regular sale or FFL 1 only.

In the process of getting mine, although I haven't hunted in 15 years and lost my hunters safety license number. I've heard that's not a big deal anyway.

Do it, very easy to do and if you buy more than one gun it has paid for itself. Just got mine renewed and they were fast. They are very handy to have.

Is the CLEO signature something new? Last time I only had to mail a copy of my application to them. No response on their part was needed.

No, I just renewed also. You just have to send a copy of the application for the C&R to your Chief LEO in your area. They don't have to sign it or approve anything. The BATF just want them to know you are in their area as a "collector".

First time I did it the Chief of police in my area called me and asked what he was supposed to do with it. I told him it was just informational and he could do as he liked with the forum. He told me "OK, I have a round file just for it" and we just laughed.

I called BATFE today as mine expires on April 1, 2014 and the guy said that my renewal was mailed on January 2. As I still have yet to receive it he stated he would mail me a renewal today. It is well worth the $30.00
Damn, I'll bet that's going to leave a mark! Probably hurt too!

I have mine, and as stated above it's well worth the $30.00. I save more than that with the discounts I receive from Brownell's because of it, not to mention the transfer fee savings.

Mine expires March 1st 2014. I sent my renewal in very early Jan (1st or 2nd) and I just got it yesterday.

If you are going to collect milsurp guns then you need a C&R. And all you have to do is mail a copy of your initial request to the CLEO. Brownells sales a great bound acquisition and disposition book for about $10, well worth the $30 for the license.

Well worth it. I think I have had mine for 10+ years. And the ATF has always been very helpful to answer questions, etc. Overall, a good experience.

Just a cautionary post. You will find that the C&R has direct links to the amount of cash you have left in the bank and If you are married, the amount of little discussions with the wife.

Doesn't the LEO have to initial the four boxes in item 14? Or does the applicant initial those boxes?
