Which is best PE, PEM or PU set up

Post by desert drifter »

I've been a student of the Mosin Nagant sniper rifle off and on for the past few years and would like to hear some opinions on which of the scope and mount systems were the best.

I feel that the PU system would be the easiest to install but the hardest to index zero. The high placement of scope left little cheek weld. But no doubt served the Russians well.

The PEM placed the scope lower, could have been more costly to manufacture. The PE scope is better than the PU scope.

The PE mount, to me, would have been the placed the scope lowest of the three was simpler and more rugged than the other two. My vote goes to the PE scope with PE mount.

Which system do you favor?

Please delete the above post. I feel that it might be misinterpreted that I am attempting to build a sniper rifle. I am very aware that this forum is about conservation of original military rifles and I have no intention what so ever of building a sniper rilfe or making any modifications to any Mosin Nagant riflefor any reason.

It was posted out of idle curiosity and nothing else.

I don't think it needs to be deleted. It could be an interesting discussion. I had never really thought about it before, but I think I would agree with your assessment.

Get one of each, and then answer the question for yourself!

I agree with the PE also. Most of us will only ever have the PU though. I do have a Tula ex PEM so I would like to have a PEM sniper as well. But that's a dream.

I would really enjoy having a collection of all the Mosin Nagant sniper variants including the Finns, Czechs et. al.

It would be simple enough to set down at a bench and shoot each variant for accuracy comparisons. But how would anyone ever compare the "battlefield reliability" under battle conditions. On one hand it seems that the PU system would certainly be the most fragile. On the other hand I can't imagine any tougher proving ground than Stalingrad from late summer of 1942 to February of 1943. Who can complain about the durability of the PUs and PEMs during those times. Plus look how long the PU stayed in service and used after WWII. I wouldn't be a bit surprised if some of them are still being used in Afghanistan or other parts of the globe today.

Interesting to think about.

Thanks for your comments.
