1944

So a buddy brings me a 1944 Mosin and want's me to sporterize it for him. I looked it over told him I would not do it and convinced him not to mess with it by telling him that 44 is a lower production year so he should leave it be. Anyway more to the point...

I am no expert on these fine firearms by any means and found a few things I thought where weird and was wonder if you fine gents could help set me strait on some of the finer points.

I will just list the things I am wondering about over each pic.

The square shape over the date and the upside down L behind the date.
I also found it weird that the receiver Has an upside down L and a K in front of 2016 but all the other parts just have the numbers 2016.
Image

The bottom of the receiver has what looks to be 499 on it. I have heard of old dates being down there but 499?
Also if you look to the left of the numbers I don't know that I would call it a crack but you can see what looked to be almost like an old cut (hard to see in pic).
Image

I am guessing this is just from it being made during war time (I can tell a quality difference from my 38) but the whole length of barrel under the hand guard is ribbed like this.
Image

Also the stock has very few markings on it and is even missing the rearsenal mark.

I think the square is the Arsenal Refurbishment mark, the letters before the Serial numbers are cyrillic letters from the Russian Alphabet,i forget what year they started doing that.
Not sure about the line you are refering to,i cant see it well enough.
Thanks for saving it..

Ok I thought the square might be a rearsenal mark also. I know some have the letters on them (My 38 does) but what I found funny on this one is they are only on the receiver and the rest of the parts just read 2016.

The lack of cryllic prefixes was from the arsenal refurb process. The numbers were scrubbed and the 2016 was put on. I am not sure if they ever stamped the prefixes during refurb but the lack of them is completely normal. Also the ribbed look on the barrel was due to expedited manufacturing during the war. While as fully functional as pre-war years they are not as "pretty". As to the 499 I have no clue, could just be one of the many unknown markings on these. Way to go on saving the rifle from being sporterized :D

I am guessing they did because mine has them on every one of the parts as well as others I have looked at.

Boy could I tell.

Man that's the one thing I was most unsure of and I was afraid it was going to turn out to be an unknown.

The line you see, is the barrel alignment mark.

The upside-down L after the date is short for year, which is ГOД in cyrillic.

RE: ribbed barel : My uncle had a late war Mauser with the same type of ribbing on the barrel. It did have a smooth action!!!!!!
