Don't want to sound like a idiot on this but I'm looking for a tool that I have seen on TV. I was watching Pawn Stars a few weeks ago and when they called in the "expert" to look at a black powder pistol he had a tool on his key ring he put in the barrel and he could tell the caliber or at least get close.
The tool was about 3" long with one end tapering to a narrow point. The side has a scale that looked like a ruler but it had different calibers marked. You put the narrow point into the barrel of the when it stopped you read the scale on the side to tell the caliber.
Now I know this will only give you the size of the barrel not a true caliber of the firearm but it would get you close.
So who can tell me where I might find one of these and what they are called?

Re: Gage checking tool
I've seen them for shotguns like this.
They are called a bore gauge.

Re: Gage checking tool
Are you wanting to use it for black powder or shotguns, or both?
Re: Gage checking tool
I was thinking mostly for Black Powder but if I could find one that would be used for both would be cool.

Re: Gage checking tool
I have one on my keychain that I use at the gun shop to determine bore sizes and calibers. One side is shotgun bore sizes and the other side is calibers. Had it for years, it is marked Colt. I got it off ebay.

I got mine from Dixie Gun Works, Google them, they have them, it's a basic BP shooters tool.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

TOF has them in stock part number BORE-GAUGE, $2.99. I am sure Dixie would have them too.
