Markings on the GEW 88

Post by Junk Yard Dog »

Some teaser pics of the latest rifle, Russell needs to see some GEW88 markings so I am posting some from my as yet uncleaned GEW88. This rifle is a 100% matching numbers piece, Danzig 1895, and S converted, but not converted to use the later GEW98 stripper clips. The pics show the barreled receiver with the barrel jacket removed, the barrel and receiver on these rifles were left in the white, the barrel has not been cleaned, it was this clean when I pulled off the jacket. Just some minor corrosion to clean up on the receiver. What will take some time is the removal of many small paint splatters all over the rifle. This is a Great War GI bringhome, VFW post number marked on the stock, a NY post not far from here, they had it on a wall for a long time and didn't cover it when painting. The bore is choked with hardened dust that I am still removing, rifling under it looks very good. A real ghost of the Great War, I see no sign that this rifle has been fired since 1918.

Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.
Don't hit at all if it is honorably possible to avoid hitting; but never hit soft.
