Russian Baikal 12ga double barrel

Post by ponycarman »

I had been looking at these for a while. This one was at a local shop hanging above a door. Been there quite a while. Well when my wife said I could put something on layaway for our anniversary in December I pull the trigger so to speak and grabbed it.

Made in russia by a company called baikal. Its a 12ga double barrel shotgun. Coachgun/ cowboy style with 18in barrels, doube triggers, solid steel butt plate, functional external hammers, extrators, and pretty nice walnut furniture. The barrels are chrome lined and I believe the are cold hammer forged. It also has removable choke tubes and comes with cylinder, improved cylinder, modified, and full choke tubes.

I've heard both good and bad things about them. Mostly good from those who own them and most of the bad appears to come from people who don't. Its pretty nice fore the money but being my first double I have nothing to compare it to.

Lighting isn't great in the room I took the pics in but I did my best. The pics don't really do it justice.

It looks nice. The fit and finish appear better than I had heard about these. Thanks for the first hand report.

Hey ponycar, just getting back to this thread to see if you posted up your coach gun. Well I'll say you did. I don't know why anybody would see fit to say anything bad about these great looking shotguns. They are coming back as popular working replicas from the old days because of the super popular cowboy action shooting clubs and SASS. Man those old time hammers, nice walnut, and modern choke tubes and chrome lined barrels, with injectors? How much cooler can you get?

I know haha. Its quite an interesting shotgun. Simple, function, and practical. The removable choke tubes adds flexibility. With a ton of flair from the older shotgun designs. I like it. Even after it has been dented lol. Every blemish adds to the working shotgun image. And it is just that, made to be used and it is being used  . Alot more than I thought it woukd be right off. Its a handy size to tote around too. Might be a good small game shotgun.

I'll lool at the manual that came with it tonight and see. I believe it is a variation of the izh-43. By the manual it was made in 2011. But purchased new in 2013. Must have sat in a importers warehouse or something. Im not sure of the inner working but the hammers appear to be fully functional. When the action is open, trigger held, and pushing forward on what the hammer strikes the fireing pin protrudes. It doesn'thave full ejectors just extractors. The shells are only pulled out of the chamber enough to grab them. Wood to metal fit isn'tbad from what I can tell. I'll check again tonight on some stuff and post it.

The manual calls it an mp220f but that is the importers model number. The model on the build sheet is MP-43KH. It does have functional hammers.
