Budding M44 Collection

Post by Mike »

Right now I have 5 Mosin variants, I have been trying to decide what direction I want to go in when collecting more. I don't want to buy everything I can find, I'd rather pick a sub-set of Mosins and concentrate on that. I just didn't know what.

Well, on Saturday I will be buying a 1944 Izhevsk M44, details will follow when I get it, this is my first Russian M44 and will go with my Polish and Chinese M44s - call it what you want, the T53 is an M44. So, since I will usually choose an M44 over a 91/30 when I head for the range this should probably be the way my collection should go, M44 variants. It will give me focus, I can hunt for something particular rather than look at all that is available and see if something appeals.

So, I'll need a Tula, a Hungarian and a Romanian, who else made M44 variants?

There are rumors of a North Korean varient, just rumors as far as I know. I think you have the list pretty much covered, how about the 1943 M44? Hard to find.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

That's what I like, I challenge, a 1943 M44!

As to the North Korean version, I have heard about that but I read on here recently that China fired up the T53 factory in the 60's and they actually made the guns, were they made in North Korea or China? Hunting one of those down would certainly be a challenge!

Hate to make you wait that long, knowing how impatient you are to get your hands on a new rifle...but that "winter weather advisory" for tomorrow starting at noon and running through Saturday 6AM, if it pans out, freezing rain and sleet aren't anything to mess around with. It's not going anywhere, it's nice and snug and 72 degrees in my "Milsurp" fridge in the basement!

Actually it's just a "transfer" from one member to another....lol. I guess sharing the disease? I hate to admit it but I'm down to one Mosin after Mike gets this one from me, a mutt Hungarian M44 that I threw together from parts and can't see selling to anyone. The arthritis in my neck is driving me to smaller calibers and I'm much rather see this beauty of an Izhevsk M44 go to a forum member than a possible bubba. It's by far the most accurate Mosin I've ever owned and I'm sure Mike will be sure and post LOTS of pics of it once he gets his hands on it!

M44's where produced by Russian, Poland, Hungary, Romania, & China, they where also refurbed by Yugoslavia, Czech, & East Germany /1\DDR . Additionally they can be found showing heritage from any number of communist and former communist countries. There is even the uber rare M44 L ( http://7.62x54r.net/MosinID/MosinRareM44L.htm ) and the original 91/38's that where built just like the M44's

True, but there are fewer variants of M44 than 91/30 and M44s are harder to come by so it will make the hunt more fun. :D

I'm going to have to do some research on how to identify these, of that list I would love a Yuslav refurb. I drove the length of Yugoslavia in an MG in 1987, the country was beautiful and the people were welcoming. Even the "authorities" were friendly, they were mostly just local kids with no gripes against anyone. The local cop in one restaurant said hello as he leaned his PPSH against his chair when he sat down to eat, he didn't care that we were Capitalist Foreigners.

Yugo's are easy to spot, they will be stamped with a " 1TRZ" on the stock.
