My 1937 Izhevsk rifle!

Post by Bravo Tango »

Hello, I am new to this forum, and new to the Mosin Nagant, But I have really developed quite a love for these old girls in a short order of time.

Here's what I've been able to learn about my mosin, any corrections or contributions to information about it, would be great!

1937 Izhevsk Arsenal born - upper barrel tang markings changed following year
Sitting in an early, pre-war stock, notable by the escutcheons and brass end caps on the upper hand guard.
serials are all matching, sans bayonet.
practically every component is stamped with the izhevsk triangle and arrow.

Likely Arsenal Refurbished in the 70's, shellac is mostly present and shinny, stock has some repairs, including a repair just behind the nose cap and above the front barrel band spring, that i saw exactly on another rifle just a few days ago, here on this forum. there is also a repair centered just under the bolt handle in the closed position, could this stock have housed a bent bolt (Sniper PU Action, that never had the scope mounted?) at some point? there is no repair to the left side of the stock, where wood would have been removed to mount the scope. there is also black touch up paint to the bluing, on the barrel and magazine plate, the paint on the barrel was concealing some pitting and rust, which i cleaned with a brass brush and hoppes9, i felt it was minor and would be just fine to shoot, would you all agree its not a problem?

also I would like to note that the bore is absolutely beautiful, shiny and clean without any pitting, but i have not been able to get a decent picture of it :( my camera phone is not the best for this! now I know another piece of equipment I need haha.

anyway, thank you in advance to you knowledgeable folks, Confident I will enjoy this forum.

Looks like you have it so far, however as for the bent bolt, any stock can have that without alteration. The rifle could have been refurbished in 1948, 1955, 1962, or the early 70's, hard to say except when you see things that are later technology like engraved serial numbers. Nice rifle.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

Looks like a nice rifle. Welcome to the forum. The repair on the stocks are just repairs and not for a bent bolt as there was no cutout for a bent bolt. The black paint is russain arsenal bluing. A lot of the rifles have small pits and it is usualy ok to shoot them. Not sure what you are talking about the upper barrel tang changing though.

Thanks Fellas,

Desdem, I was refering to how the markings on the barrel shank, serial, year, arsenal crest, et cetera changed at izhevsk the following year, in 1938. I can see the confusion in my initial wording.

Thanks for clearing up my curiosity about the repair directly under the bolt handle.

Nice 37' Izhevsk! My first Mosin is a 1937 Izhevsk. She was pretty accurate shooting way out about 1000 meters. Just pot shot shooting but it surprised me how on line it was. Just a shade high too. Welcome to the madness we call mosinitus.

Nice refurb. One note. The aresenal markings didn't change at all in 38, but they did start using apha-numeric prefixes in the serial numbers. The rifle was forced matched at refurb most likely, and the importer mixed the bayonets up. Normal for these. I like the 36 and 37 dated 91/30s.

Thanks everyone! I really enjoy this rifle and looking at the ones you all share, I hope to soon aquire a Tula M44, and I would like a couple Finns, M27, M28 and a Remington would be nice too... yeah I already got it pretty bad, lol.

Anyway, Cunfusion about the markings changing - a discovery I thought I made early in my research of the rifle, after revisiting the markings, it was just a case of the year/serial being offset a bit, from a referance pic i got over at 7.62x54r.net, anyways, carry on.
