I ordered a M44 from J&G Sales
I ordered a M44 from J&G Sales in Prescott. I don't think I've ever seen one before. I paid $149 for it but I see they've gone up to $179 but they are still down from $199 supposedly. It is supposed to be in "very good" condition and I gave them another $10 to hand pick the carbine for whatever that truly means. Wish me luck. It will be here today. I'll report back here when I get it home tonight.

Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

Good Luck. To my way of thinking the hand pick fee is an extra $10 in there pocket and you get the luck of the draw but lets see what happens. Bill

Nope, familiar with the backroom operations with J@G hand pick will get you a better looking example from the particular lot, possibly matching numbers. Not a grade in itself though if the hand picked option is paid for, J@G will provide a cosmetically nicer rifle than whats in the rest of the batch.

Hope that it was packaged more carefully than the one that I got! Piss pour and banging to Hell, by the time it got to me.
Very serious abrasions to the stock, which were not war time, but obviously after the fact.
Which is the reason that I sent it back for credit.
Good folks to deal w/ as customer service was spot on +++.
I would have thought that knowing what a 1944 M44 Tula was that they would have wrapped the hell out of it, but it wasn't the case, just threw in some funky shreaded cardboard packing that allowed it to free float from their house to mine...

Probably NOT as the one from Classic Firearms!!!IPAs wrote:Well......

Encased w/in (2) boxes, the Molot white box and then the brown box from Classic.
Superior, wrapping to avoid damage to a '44 Tula M44.
+++++to Classic for their attention to detail in packaging!
My hats off to Classic for their going the extra mile to preserve a truly classic piece w/ the M44!!!

Re: I ordered a M44 from J&G Sales
Sorry guys. I don't seem to be able to "reply" from the Tappa thingy on the smarter than me phone.
The M44, as I am just now learning, is a Molot whatever that is; and appears to be one of the first from J&B Sales. I haven't been able to stop long enough to look up the markings but it is a 1944 Izhevsk. The stock is typical refurb slopped varnish with the few mystery scuffs but it is in great shape. The refurb bluing looks just fine and the bore is actually bright yet counter-bored. Other than being manufactured in a hurry there are no serious hits in the iron. I don't know what constitutes "very good" but the rifle is rust free less the magazine. That being said, all numbers match except the magazine. I can't complain. I understand these are going up in price. I'm pleased for the $149 I spent. When I get all the goop out of it it will be a together M44. I plan to shoot it this weekend. I'm a pretty good picture taker so I'll get some shots this weekend out in the desert and post them up then.

Molot is just the handler from Russia. The question is about what they do at their facility to the rifles. Is an authentic Russian m44.
We await the fotos.

Re: I ordered a M44 from J&G Sales
Curious to see what yours looks like, I just got mine last week from J&G and the stock looked like someone threw it down some stairs. scratches and gouges all over. Mine was a 1944 as well and counterbored. It seems that is the common year and arsenal right now. Even with the marks I like it. I will be holding onto it as it will still be a functional rifle.
I posted pics of mine in the Molot subforum if you want to take a gander.
Anyway, Congrats! I am sure it will be a good shooter.

I'm going to start cleaning it tonight while it is apart. Then I'll photograph detail markings before I get it pt back together.
Anyone know how to put the bands back on without strafing the stock the full length of the hand guard?

Someone outta make that a sticky!Mohave-Tec wrote:Anyone know how to put the bands back on without strafing the stock the full length of the hand guard?
Very easy and slowly. ..........On the bottom of the band (to be removed) where there is a small gap, put a small flat blade screwdriver in there and give it a twist. It will expand that band and allow it to slide over easier.
The key is the right screw driver and don't gouge the wood and go slowly. That How I do it and it works for me every time!

Re: I ordered a M44 from J&G Sales
I found that the screw driver method mentioned above works ok but is still a pain in the ass.
I do it this way, you'll need a small pair of needle nose pliers.
Start by removing the cleaning rod if its still on the rifle. Then get your needle nose pliers and insert them in the opening thats in the barrel bands so the tips of the pliers bottom out in the groove the cleaning rods resides in. You now can guide the barrel bands off without marring up the rifle and you can easily use your other hand to press the retaining springs and slide the barrel band past and down the length of the barrel.
Shown demonstrated on my "Ugly Betty" 89.00 buck 91/30 from Aim....shes the only one that sits at the ready. So don't mind the finish of what you see there, its how she was when I got her. Rough but ready and very accurate

If look close this barrel band is a tight one, its left its impression in the rifle lol.
Hope this helps.

Now that looks like a plan. I'd already been using the screwdriver method. It worked but left something to be desired. But my needle nose ran away. Off the the hardware store in the morning.rusko75 wrote:I found that the screw driver method mentioned above works ok but is still a pain in the ass.

Glad I could help
Re: I ordered a M44 from J&G Sales
Once you remove the front band, then release the rear band from the metal clip. At that point in time, the entire hand guard will slide forward on the barrel, then just slip the band off to the rear. I just did this today. The bands fit tight on some, and loose on others. This one was tight. Releasing it from the clip was the hardest part. Sliding the guard down the barrel allowed me to just move the band an inch or so to the rear and not have to slide it along the entire length of the guard.
