I have discovered a new fun shooting sport.

Post by ponycarman »

Last weekend I shot with a buddy and his family. Shot various things. Pistols, rifles, and such. But the main activity was shooting target clays. It was my first time. I had been wanting to try it out but never had gotten too. It was such a blast that my buddy bought a hand thrower, a case of clays, and some ammo for this weekend. I brought the shotguns and the some ammo as well. I think I am hooked. It is some much fun shooting these things out of the air haha.

We learning quickly how to do it all. Only wasted minimal clays on learning how to use the thrower and make hits. We probably hit about 80% of the case and uses any leftovers for rifle and pistol targets haha.

My 870 got a good workout and performed perfectly. It was the first time it had been used this much in one session. On the downside I dinged up my new coachguns stock . The table the stuff was on was forward and to the side of where we were shooting clays. We had one clay take a turn a land on the table  . I guess its just a battle scar and will give it a used cowboy shotgun look to it

Sorry for the long post, just wanted to share the great day shooting I had with y'all. Here is the only pic I took.

Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

Clays are a lot of fun, I have been shooting skeet for a couple of years now and love it!

I haven't shot skeet or trap for many years at a rear range but my neighbors and a clay throwing chair that launches 2 at a time and we go out in the field behind me to have contests between a bunch of us. Lots of fun.

It is tons of fun. Good practice too. We have been using a cheap hand thrower so that guves you a good workout too haha. I can't wait for the next shooting trip.

Having always been mostly into rifles, I am just getting into shotguns this year. They are a lot of fun, the variety of things you can do with a single shotgun is like bringing 5 different rifles to the range. My buddy has an electric thrower with the random direction and angle movement. Can't wait to get back out there.

The only downside is how expensive volume shooting with anything other than cheap target loads can get, and how much dang space they take up on the ammo shelf!

Haha I definitely understand about the space and cost. Sporting loads are cheapest but I find them kinda boring to shoot at non reactive targets like paper. Just turns it to confetti. Shooting at stuff that moves and shatters is much more fun

Yeah target loads aren't any fun on paper, buckshot isn't really either. Slugs for paper, buckshot for plinking stuff, and target loads for clays and removing dead branches from trees at a hunting cabin. There's a dead branch dangling off another 50" up in one of the trees at my house I'd love to pop once or twice and take care of it, but I don't think my neighbors would approve

I love shooting clay pigeons, and a few times I have gone to a local sporting clays range where you shoot at different stations while walking the course through the woods. At my local range they have the throwers mounted to 4x4 posts and a couple or 3 guys, or gals, can have a great time. If you buy your ammo at Walmart you can get a hundred rounds of 12 or 20 ga target loads for like 21.00! A pretty good deal. Pony, have you shown us that coach gun? Now those are cool shotguns.

My club has a regular Trap range with 4 auto/electric throwers. I don't shoot in the leagues but I do go occasionally and have a lot of fun. A few buddies of mine belong to different clubs and I have shot their Sporting Clay courses and they are a blast.
Damn, I'll bet that's going to leave a mark! Probably hurt too!

Thats where I get my shotgun ammo too :) . 100rnds of federal target loads for $28. My shotguns like the federal a bit better than the cheaper winchester shells.

Yep I posted the coachgun. Except now it has some small nics in the stock and a dent  . It did pretty well against the clays as well but it was much more challenging with the shorter shotgun. Even shot a few with my single shot lol. The coachgun and single shot both pack a big punch even with light loads.

I just bought a nice Browning O/U to shoot Sport Clays. I know it will be fun as I was able to rent the same model at the Sporting Clays range.

I would love to make sporting clays a regular event but it's kind of expensive. On par with what I hear a lot of guys spend on golf. As a matter of fact the range I have been to in Dallas has the option of renting golf carts if you don't want to walk it. Even as out of shape as I am, walking it was refreshing. It cost about 40 maybe 45 bucks per person plus ammo. That means a couple or more hours of fun will run about 75.00 and I can't do that too regularly. Not if I am gonna keep my Mosin collecting alive!

Haha I hear ya. Around here its pretty cheap overall if you have your own stuff. I have a buddy with the space to shoot, we got a. Cheap hand thrower, I have the shotguns, only clays and ammo is left. Its not a professional setup but its still very fun. Ammo and clays are pretty cheap. Ammo is about 30 for 100rnds and clays are less than 10 for 90. Also there is a local public range nearby that has mechanical throwers free to use. Its very very fun though and I'm sure I will be doing it more frequently. Good practice for any type of bird hunting too.

Never shot clays, but had a great time helping a farmer rid his barn of pesky pidgeons. I probably killed about 20 that day; some in the air some on the ground. My best shot of all time was 4 with one shot. They were on the ground and I quietly snuck up on them and lined them up just perfectly. Will never do that again in a million years!

Wow 4 with one shot. What were you using to shoot them?

Thanks, the stock came with the shotgun when I bought it. I fell in love with it on the gun shop wall and had to have it. I've had it a little while now. And now that we have been using it for clays I have an excuse to get it out more often :)
