Picked up a Ruger 10/22 today

Post by cjsimoh »

Went to the local Gander Mountain and picked up a Ruger 10/22 scoped combo. I've always wanted one, so when I saw they had a Black Friday price on them, I went up and grabbed one. Those of you who have a 10/22, what's your favorite accessory/mod and what brand of ammo does your 10/22 like?

There are so many things you can do to these that it is crazy. I have a old 10/22 with the walnut stock, and every time I want to think about replacing something I talk myself out of it. So I think about a newer 10/22 to build on. The problem is milsurps get in the way. My favorite mod that I want to do is a nice thumbhole laminate stock and heavy bull barrel. There are receiver mods, or complete performance receiver replacements, trigger mods, bolt mods, and if you want to ever build up a nice 10/22 there is much 10/22 talk on the rimfirecentral.com forum. They also have forums for all rimfire guns, as well as all stock Ruger 10/22 rifles. The problem is some of those guys are hard core Ruger rifle guys that don't have much to say about a brand new stock 10/22. Some guys went ballistic when Ruger switched to plastic parts for the trigger guard, butt plate, etc...... :P
Personally, I think you got yourself a sweet little rifle that should be fantastic just as it is, and hopefully you can find lots of ammo again soon. Remington is selling a bucket o bullets that has 1400 rds in a plastic tub. They are supposed to be about 60-70 bucks but I have not found any yet. Some people hate Remington 22 ammo, and some like it, like me. My preference is the 100 rd packs of CCI Mini Mags, but I cannot find them either. I refuse to pay scalper prices for ammo, fortunately I have couple of 50 cal cans full of 22 ammo, but I would like to keep it that way.

I just got a new 10/22 last weekend too. Good rifles. My wife has one as well. The deal was too good to pass on. No mods for me yet. Just shoot it :) . After while I may update the barrel, stock, trigger, and add an optic. That would probably finish it up for me haha.

A timney trigger, techsights(aprature type) will make your 10/22 a fast and accurate shooter. drill a hole through the rear of the receiver so a cleaning rod can be run the correct way and you will never have to remove the barrel to clean. This keeps your zero.

I have 2 10/22's. The one I shoot most got a set of these USGI sights. They are about $65.00 but well worth the price. As for ammo mine seem to just like the Eley or Wolf match target.

How accurate typically is a stock 10/22? Never have shot paper to find out yet.

I always thought they were accurate enough, till I shot my brother's near 1000.00 custom build and all the sudden was making one raggedy hole in the paper. But they are squirrel hunting accurate enough. With the fancy high dollar one you can hunt the fleas on the squirrel!

Haha thats what I was wondering. Don't really need it one hole accurate. I'm not fly or flea hunting  . Just good enough for target shooting, plinking, and possibly squirrel. While I would like it as accurate as I can get it, I'm not willing to sink that much money in one lol. And I like being able to use iron sights. Not many aftermarket barrels keep the irons. Also I don't like how much weight the thick target barrels add.

I've read that replacing the bolt stop pin with a polymer/plastic one is a good idea. cuts recoil and keeps the pin holes from wearing out over time...

That sounds like a good idea. Thanks for the info. That would be why I've seen so many replacement pins are available.

Pony, you know how short and light these carbines are, right? Imagine the 44 magnum carbine being basically the same size and weight. It's heavier, but doesn't seem like it. Oh fun.:P

I have never shot paper with mine either. It has killed plenty of empty can cans, rabbits, squirrels, a fox, even a bobcat once, never have shot paper.

 love those 44 mags! I've seen a few of them locally. But haven't seen one with a price to make me want it yet haha. They are very handy sized. Great balance. With their short carbine length I'm sure they would be nice to tote in the woods. :)
