I'd never heard of it but I can tell you it will never happen to me. I'm real careful about what ammo goes in the firearm I'm shooting, period. If I don't know what it is it goes in the collectible ammo can. I have one H&R Topper M48 20ga that's a project rifle I need to rehab after 20 years in a wet basement. I have 20ga shells but they're on an ammo can of their own buried in the closet.millman wrote:That is called a 12/20 burst. I watched two dumbasses on the NRA tv show try that with a Bennelli . Nothing happened. The 12 blew the 20 right out of the barrel, cycled the action and was ready to go for the next shot. I was amazed. I expected to see what you have here with the 1100.

They make 12s red usually, and 20s yellow, but this is not always the case. It pays to be careful.

Stopped by Weldon's house today, and saw the barrel in question. Kinda scary to see in person. My guess is barrel obstruction of some type, but that is only a guess. Really glad nobody got hurt.

He has a new toy too and tried out some new ammo while he was here.

So far I am liking that gun, and the DRT frangible ammo. Softer recoil, lighter bullets make carrying the gun more better.

Re: Remington 1100 Barrel Blew Up
Yeah well I like it too but I'm a softie for any firearm. I really like the .45ACP in most anything but the 1911 or some variant is on my list of must haves. That ammo I traded you for the S&W 22 was for my future 1911 purchase. Whenever that may be.Fred_G wrote:So far I am liking that gun, and the DRT frangible ammo. OK, now we all want to know who Rudy is and what happened to him

Re: Remington 1100 Barrel Blew Up
Long story but he's a friend that owns an ammo manufacturing business and seems to be forgetting to get back to me about some ammo I've asked him to give me a price on quite a few times when we talk on the phone. Reminds me of that post where someone was pissed at a vendor because they didn't do something they said they were going to on the busiest online shopping day of the year. Hell this guy's a friend of mine, calls me here all the time and seems to forget we talked the next day.Junk Yard Dog wrote:OK, now we all want to know who Rudy is and what happened to him

Sounds like there may be a medical condition involved, the forgetting stuff part bothers me considering he is involved with making ammunition were forgetting something could be critical. I knew someone who was forgetting stuff like that and it turned out to be a 80% blockage in the veins of his neck feeding blood to his brain, he needed a bypass. The guy I knew had a condition that could be corrected and was, lets hope Rudy doesn't suffer from one of the other conditions that are not correctable.

Heh, no it's nothing like that Jim. He's my age, 50s and might be a bit forgetful but he's not making ammo himself. He's one of the owners and the ammo is being made about 2,100 miles away. They make about 17 million rounds a day but he's not the one doing it. I know he's a busy man but it's frustrating dealing with someone that says they're going to do something and totally flake it off.Junk Yard Dog wrote:Sounds like there may be a medical condition involved, the forgetting stuff part bothers me considering he is involved with making ammunition were forgetting something could be critical. Hope you get this shotgun back up and running. I got to shoot one last Friday. Very nice and smooth shooting shotgun.

Oh ok. After having worked on it, what do you think of its action design? I was so impressed with the one I shot I am thinking about adding it to my list.

Re: Remington 1100 Barrel Blew Up
They started making the 1100s in 1963 and it quickly became the most popular shotgun for skeet and trap shooters. They're a great gun. I worked on 3 of them last month. This was one, I also worked on his dads which was missing parts and my neighbors that was just real tired. All were a breeze to work on. I took all three completely apart, gave them a good cleaning and replaced the usual worn parts these need after years of shooting and little to no maintenance. The gas piston, piston seal and barrel seal are usually never replaced as well as the action spring. I replaced them on all three guns as well as the bolt buffers and some missing parts. They're easy to disassemble and clean. Very simple design and are a great gun to have in the arsenal. It's on my to get list for sure. Like any firearm you have to maintain them but as long as you do they're very reliable.ponycarman wrote:Oh ok. After having worked on it, what do you think of its action design? Here's what this one looks like almost completely disassembled.

Re: Remington 1100 Barrel Blew Up
Depending on year, model and condition they can go as much as $900+ but usually around $400 up. This one and his dads are the magnum models and the other one I worked on wasn't. I didn't see much difference besides the barrels were 3" chambers but the magnum's receivers might be a bit more beefed up. The magnum models are stamped Magnum on the receiver. I was at a gunshop a month ago and he had three of them for sale that were his brother in laws and wanted from $600 to around $900 but said their was room to work with on the price. These were closet queens and in like new condition so they were worth a little more than ones used more regularly.ponycarman wrote:excellent!. I'll keep my eyes open for them. I'll have to get up to speed on what they are going for now. Saw one at a flea market for 475 the other day.
Edit: One thing to remember is a lot of these, mostly the magnum models, don't like low brass (lower velocity) shells. They don't have enough power to cycle the action. That's more specific to the barrel and what it's chambered for. The ones chambered for 3" magnum shells have smaller gas ports to handle the higher velocity shells so they don't beat the crap out of the receiver. You can change the barrel to a 2 3/4" chambered one and shoot low brass on a magnum receiver.
