Traded for first SKS
Traded for first SKS
I traded a WASR 10/63 for this mint unfired Norinco SKS and cash. I believe from the sticky's that this is a commercial SKS made in 1992. I would like to know what sub model it is, or what name it was sold under, such as paratrooper, sporter, etc. I can't find any arsenal markings on it.

Not a Paratrooper nor a sporter. I prefer these & the Soviet versions for their chrome-lined barrels. Nice acquisition!

Re: Traded for first SKS
It's not one of the various sub models, it has a full length barrel, and no other import modification done. It was imported by CSI in Ontario, Cali. It possibly has a pinned barrel if it's that late in production also, I have a inned barrel and it's quite the shooter
One interesting thing, if made and imported in '92, it shouldn't have the bayonet installed. Most however do have them installed
, and at some point later they removed the bayonet mounting lugs also. Usually these were imported and the bayonet was separate and was not attached, look up Bush's 1989 "non-sporting" import ban, that is still in effect.

I have two of these; my only SKS rifles. Great fun to shoot and surprisingly well made with good fit and finish.

Great, the kind of info I wanted. I did a complete tear down and cleaning on this one, I think they seem to be very well made. Like it a lot better than my WASR.tjtM38 wrote:I have two of these; my only SKS rifles. Great fun to shoot and surprisingly well made with good fit and finish.
Re: Traded for first SKS
I have more fun shooting these rifles than my Arsenal AK. The longer barrel makes them slightly more accurate and I can load pretty fast with a good stripper clip. My friend has one he modified with a 30 round detachable magazine which is marginal as far as reliable feeding. The weapon was designed with a fixed box magazine and I choose to keep it that way.tnplumber wrote:I did a complete tear down and cleaning on this one, I think they seem to be very well made. Exactly how I think, I would never modify mine, even though it was manufactured for the commercial market. I actually like the looks of the SKS over the AK variants. I am still going to keep my eyes out for a Tula SKS, to add to my collection.tjtM38 wrote:I have more fun shooting these rifles than my Arsenal AK. There are some people on the forum who have some of the most impressive collection of SKS rifles you will ever see; howiebearse and Greasemonkey, just to name a couple. Every time I see their posted pics, it makes me drool.

Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

I have always liked the SKS too. They just seem like good shooting, relatively well-made guns that fire a comfortable intermediate round.
I have always thought their safety is excellent. It is one of the better placed safeties that I'm aware of. It is naturally easy to flick it off as you shoulder the rifle, unlike an AK.

I have a SKS and a AK. Only thing I like better about the AK is the trigger. I really like shooting a SKS better overall.
