Ruger Standard pistol

Post by bunkysdad »

I just recently bought this gun from a friend at work. His ex wife's grandfather was the original owner of the pistol, which according to the serial number makes it a 1962 date gun. Well I was born in the last week of 1961, so that makes me and this pistol about the same age. The Ruger Standard model .22 caliber pistol was the first firearm designed by William Ruger, and produced with his business partner Alex Sturm by the new Sturm, Ruger and Co.in 1949. The original pistols had a red eagle emblem on the left grip but was changed to black When Alex Sturm died suddenly in 1950. This one like the original, has a 4.75" barrel and 9-round magazine, but there are many versions in blued steel and stainless steel that have been produced, including the Mark II improved model and the Mark III which is the current model now being sold. Of course the original price of 37.50 has gone up, but then so has wages, so they are still quite a bargain considering just how well they eat about anything you can feed them.

If I let the gun rust, get stiff, feed it too much ammo, and drag it behind my pickup, then it would be in the same shape as me! :P

That is a very nice pistol. I have it's older brother a late 1983 MK II, Pachmayr grips and a 6" barrel. It was a gift from a business partner. Mine is ammo finicky, it hates Winchester.

I shot one when I was 9 years old... I remember liking it... But don't really remember!

One of these days I 'll have to add one to the collection.

Great pistols guys! 8-)

Very cool pistols - thanks for sharing the pics BD and LC44. I find 22's to be habit forming (like some other firearms :D) .

An excellent specimen of a fine pistol. Enjoy. I had a Mark II that I sold to a buddy who wanted to start shooting Bullseye. I was my 2nd back up and was sitting in the vault a lot so I let it go. It would and still does (as I understand it from my buddy) handle any .22lr ammunition without a problem.
Damn, I'll bet that's going to leave a mark! Probably hurt too!

I have a Ruger Mark II myself and i have to say it's the funnest handgun I have to shoot. Mine is a target model but nonetheless it's a blast. I picked it up used for a couple bills several years ago and I wouldn't consider selling it.

Wow jfeenin that's beautiful. I have shot a very similar rig and it was a total tackdriver. Zero recoil from the weighted balance on the muzzle end.

It's definitely more accurate than I am. That group was 10 shots @ 25yds off a rest of course. With cheap Remmington Thunderbolt ammo. The pistol never ceases to amaze me but I must admit if I did it again, and I might, I would do a red dot and not the scope if I do an optic at all. I am not going to change this one though. I must admit I am drawn to the original lines of the short thin original barrel like the original poster has. I may get that style next if I get another one.

Nice looking pistols. 8-) I bought 1 used about 25yrs ago and taught both of my kids to shoot with it. Like yours, mine has digested just about any .22 ammo it was fed. Great little pistol.

I have a Ruger Standard, and it's a great pistol; that little gun has trained hundreds of pistol shooters; When I have a student whose fundamentals are really poor, I bring out the ruger and explain to them that we are going to work with this pistol for a little while; they always balk, and say "but that's not the pistol I am going to carry" ; I ask them to trust me, and tell them that the ruger is a "magic pistol" that you can't miss with.....

By the time I am transitioning them back into their own pistol, I always have to insist that NO, the Ruger is NOT for sale.....

ijust love the ruger. 22. My buddy also has a 62 standard but not in nearly as nice shape as yours iI. just did a tactical solutions barrel/receiver upgrade on my mk 11. Drops some serious weight, gives you an upper and lower rail and is thread for a supressor. I don't have any plans to quiet but its nice to know I could if they ever legalize here in vt, plus the screw on muzzle break looks pretty awesome . I havent got a chance to put too many down the tube yet but the reviews are great I'll post some pics and a range report this weekend

Most have see a lot use and show it, tells you what good shooters they are. That one is beautiful and almost new looking considering how old it is.
