I'm predicting benches opening up next to you, dirty looks from the mall ninja crowd, and a 1 meter flame belching from the M44.bunkysdad wrote:When you get to the range I am predicting a huge ear to ear grin when you fire them.

Re: First timer here.. Two new Mosins
The M44 is driving me a little crazy right now. Can't figure out if the rear sight on it is canted or not. Anybody have experiences with a canted rear on the carbine? I point it, and it cants.. I put it in the rest and it seems okay.. Probably shoots just fine.
Speaking of range neighbors, I understand that these things are boomsticks in the true definition of the word. And we should all be courteous to our fellow blasters.. Anybody ever shoot this thing at an indoor range? These folks don't seem too pleased.

None of the indoor ranges that I know of around here allow 7.62x54R so you might want to check with them before hand just to be sure. The outdoor ranges are no problem and thankfully the sportsmen's club I belong to even allows the use of surplus.
Re: First timer here.. Two new Mosins
Hi, Newbe here,
I also have an M44 that also appears to have all matching serial numbers along with a canted sight just like Chiroptile's. Is that something that happened during the original rifle build or a refurb. After reading all that was said on this post I'm wondering if what I'm hearing is that ALL MN's were refurbed?
Thanks,
Rico

Re: First timer here.. Two new Mosins
Rico.. After many sleepless nights I was able to figure out that I was just holding the rifle wrong. The sights are actually spot on. I don't know if it's the weight of the bayo on the right that forces the stock to twist a little bit when holding it..
If you have a rifle rest, mount your Mosin, draw your window blinds (assuming they are horizontal,) then try to line up the tops of the rear sights flat against one of the blind leaflets..
Hope that helps.

Re: First timer here.. Two new Mosins
These rifles were mass produced and have almost universally exchangeable parts that were in most cases not made as a precision rifle originally. What I mean by that is they were made for a mostly inexperienced fighting force and were mostly geared to ease of use through simplicity and reliability under extreme circumstances with loose tolerances on the whole. If it's a refurb that may have something to do with it if the sights are actually canted. If it's a refurb the rifle you have is no longer in the original stock most likely. That may have something to do with it. If the barreled receiver was not properly fit to the stock it's in now that may have something to do with it. Also if it's a refurb the numbers matching will have little to do with this because all numbered parts are from other rifles and were scrubbed and force matched to the barreled receiver your rifle is made on. If possible start a thread with pictures of this rifle especially if you can take some showing the canted sights in relation to the rest of the rifle. We'd love to see it anyway. Post 'em up!!Rico wrote:Hi, Newbe here,

One other thing is, most Mosin Nagants were sent in for some degree of refurbishment at some time during their service life but most of the rifles being sold by retailers right now are refurbished rifles. I mean post war (cold war refurbishment).
I'll try to download some pics of the rifle & sights, but looking at the pics from Chiroptile my sights are identical to his & I did notice that my barrel/sight is not square to the receiver nor is the bayonet square to the front sight, but the bayonet is square to the stock. I also noticed from a post on this site that the M44's were made between 1943 & 1948. But i haven't been able to locate a list of the serial number ranges. Mine is PL2644. The "L" is a kind of an upside down and backwards "L". So any help in locating the serial number series & manufacturer locations would be greatly appreciated. BTW your description regarding the original serial numbers being scrubbed during a refurb makes sense, considering that when I look at the other markings and see how shallow they are compared to the deep serial numbers.. Interesting..

Serial numbers are something of a mystery when you're dealing with Mosin Nagants. The way they refurbed them is to strip the rifles completely to it's various parts, separate them, scrubbing or lining out the old numbers except the barrels, checking those parts and making them serviceable if possible. Then they reassembled them starting with a barreled receiver and pulling parts from the various bins to make a new rifle. That's when the previously numbered and now scrubbed parts are renumbered (font differences in some characters/numbers can be seen in some cases) the barrel numbers to the barrels serial number. That's also why a Tula rifle will have parts from Izhevsk and other arsenals including even New England Westinghouse or Remington. Refurbs are rifles built from parts of many other rifles. You also won't find any serial number listings. The Russians numbered the rifles all over the place during any given year with no sequencing other then small time periods at a time. They used random Cyrillic characters and may start the year at 10000 and then later in the year revert to 1000 also changing the Cyrillic charactors . This would most likely be done to confuse an enemy picking rifles up on the field as to production numbers.

Then if I understand what your saying is that ALL MN's are refurbished?

Re: First timer here.. Two new Mosins
One thing I've learned about collecting Mosins in any of their flavors is that one can rarely use the term "All" or "Never". In this case, there is such a thing as un refurbished Mosins in many different configurations. I'm sure you could find some pictures of unrefurbed rifles in the showcase area above.Rico wrote:Then if I understand what your saying is that ALL MN's are refurbished?

Re: First timer here.. Two new Mosins
Have a question for you guys.. Wanted to finally take the M44 out this weekend. Haven't shot it yet and it's been months since I acquired it. Was going through everything and noticed that the firing pin protrudes out far enough to actually touch the roof of the 95 notch.. It doesn't see-saw on it, but there is enough contact that it won't let any light through between the pin and the gauge..
I tried adjusting it and seems that it's as far back as it will go.. A little too close for comfort in my book. Any suggestions? Any similar experiences? Would love to hear..
Thank you

Re: First timer here.. Two new Mosins
That should be ok. It should see saw, touch, the 75 and maybe touch the 95. It needs to be between the two measurements. Shoot a round and look at the indentation it makes in the primer. If it looks to deep it might need to be backed out half a turn. If you have no more adjustment then we'd need to look into that and figure out why. Remember this when doing adjustments with the firing pin. It only adjusts in half turns.Chiroptile wrote:Have a question for you guys.. Wanted to finally take the M44 out this weekend.
