I'm with most everyone here... Get a Ruger. Another one to consider is a Taurus.

I may make some enemies here, nothing much can evoke stronger emotions than revolver make. Agreed Ruger makes a good gun, Taurus well I don't own any. I went out and bought a revolver when I turned 21 as I was going on a backpacking trip with a bunch of guys, my best bud was doing the same he bought Taurus, after it went back to the factory he sold it. Shopping for my first .357 when I turned 21 around '89 my late father said to me "why carry a Ruger when you can carry a Smith and Wesson or Colt" basically I think he was saying you only live once. I still have the S@W model 66 I picked out today :)

For carry well I have a Ruger. To shoot at the range a Smith & Wesson. Ruger's just can't touch Smith & Wesson when it comes to triggers. Smiths are just plain prettier too.

Excellent choice! My 1972 Model 66 has the best trigger in my gun safe. My 1976 a close second.

I am not much of a handgun guy, to me they are a tool to use to fight your way back to your rifle if you were stupid enough to separate from it in the first place. I asked for something strong and idiot proof that wouldn't drain my wallet, a Ruger GP100 is what I was handed, had the Smith been less expensive then I would have a Smith, or a Colt, makes no nevermind to me, hard to screw up a .357 revolver no matter who makes it. I like the weight of the Ruger, only a nut case goes looking to kill someone just for the sheer hell of it, sometimes it's better to have the option of bashing someone upside the head instead of shooting them, nice, heavy revolver is good for that. That's one of the reasons I never liked auto's, plastic frame pistols and all that crap, zillion rounds in the mag. All that counts is the round that hits, keep your cool, eyes on the front sight, when the shot presents itself you take it. Time and again I hear bullshit about only having six rounds, five in the Ruger old army ( no round carried under the hammer) "only" having six rounds. My response is always the same, once I blow your f***in' head off with the first round what the hell do you care what I do with the other five? I have been known to carry the Blackhawk, five rounds and single action only, that really drives the auto guys nuts. I been packin' that piece for 24 f***in' years, get me within 25 yards of the target and I will hit whatever part of it I aim at, after all this time that piece is like an extension of my hand, I point shoot with it pretty well also. The GP I have only had 21 years, you don't want to get afoul of me when I am packing that one either. I love them mean little .357's, light weight, but fast movers, great penetration, and with the right bullet capable of making a huge wound channel. You can also shoot inexpensive and easy to reload .38 specials in them.

It's probably the most versatile handgun caliber out there. My first handgun purchase, or any gun for that matter, was a .357 Ruger Single Six.

My only .357 is a Smith & Wesson model 65-2; an ex police SS revolver. It is a heck of a good shooter and a good looker to boot. The previous owner had some professional trigger tuning done on it and it is sweet. I bought this one at a pawn shop for a couple of hundred dollars several years ago. I would be quite comfortable in recommending it.

I may start carrying my short barreled .357 Vaquero for a CCW, just because nobody does it.

My .357 is a Taurus 669. It's seen tons of rounds & has been very good to me.

No disrespect to the Taurus owners but it doesn't have "Made in the U.S.A." written on it.

JYD if we were at war and on the battlefield I'd have to agree with you about the use of the handgun. But when I'm out on the town with the wife either shopping and such you can't carry that AR, Garrand or a Mauser. So the hand gun has a real purpose in the everyday life of a citizen. I sometimes carry a 45 but usually a 357, if some Thug wants to have a discussion about my wallet or my car keys we will discuss it over a barrel and I sure wouldn't want him to have a boring time of it and a 357 Magnum is just about perfect in my mind when you stoke it with 125 grain HP ammo. Heck if I had a long gun he'd never even talk to me. I wish Michigan would allow us licensed citizens to carry into the bank, I think that would reduce the amount of bank robberies we have around here. So I think the hand gun is a very useful thing to have around.
Take that 50 DE of mine it does a great job of running everyone off the hand gun range.
So I think a 357 Magnum is a very good choice for a carry round, even the FBI thought so at one time.

A Colt Python. Granted you will be broke and unable to get anything else for a year but you will have one of the finest production .357's ever made. Now if I was in the market I'd get a S&W L-frame 686 with a 4" tube. I'd get the 6 shot not the 7 or 8 or whatever it is that they are making now. An old police trade in (if you can find one) is a great deal
Damn, I'll bet that's going to leave a mark! Probably hurt too!

I vote ruger. An sp101, gp100, or even security/speed six. Ruger makes a tank of a revolver and us still at a reasonable price. I love my lcr 357.

Just a suggestion; if you are willing to go with .38 spl. instead of .357 mag., there are some good deals on Smith and Wesson police trade-ins at J&G sales. They also have some .357 mags listed as well. Look under "used hand-guns".
