M91/30 Sniper (Samco)

Post by Darryl »

Just picked this one up!

M91/30 Sniper Rifle (Samco)
1944 Izhevsk (all Izhevsk parts)
All matching except bolt and hand guard (replaced bolt, and very old replacement hand guard).

The Russians supplied these rifles to Yugoslavia and they were part of the arsenals there for years. The scopes were removed by the Yugoslavian (for a different purpose) and later the rifles were sold to SAMCO. They were not "refurbished" like the other Russian PU snipers and remain in "original" configuration and condition.

Many people "re-scope these rifles with original base, mount and scopes and that is OK. The rifles have never been out of "sniper configuration". It is commonly understood that these rifles have been "re-scoped" if they have a scope on them. This rifle will probably remain in this condition for now unless I find a scope setup very cheap (I have other rifles to buy right now! :bwink: )

First time I have seen a "sniper" with the serial # stamped under the butt plate on the stock (photo on right below)

If you like "grease", well this is the one for you! I can't see just taking "compressed air and a rag and wiping it off either! This will take some serious cleaning.

It is in excellent shape and has not been refurbished. There is no remaining original finish on the stock (if it ever had shellac at all). It is mostly a bare wood stock which has had oil on it from either the cleaning process of the rifle over the years or from storage (maybe). It is fairly dark in color.

It is sniper correct in every manner and finish.

Everything matches except the bolt. The bolt has a different number on it then the rest. It looks brand new. Now I know it isn't because it has wear marks on the side. It is not just "polished up" like a refurb is (and you can tell they usually have some grind marks left or rounded edges). This thing is crisp clean.

No counter bore. Muzzle is in excellent shape. Barrel is shinny clean and has nice rifling. Not new, but very well taken care of and not even close to worn out.

It has a scope number on the side of the shank, but has no base, mount or scope (typical of all Samco snipers, the Yugoslavians removed the scopes). Has two "pins" still installed and two threaded holes.

Lots of "dark grease" under the stock on the metal.

All the parts are Izhevsk arsenal parts including the barrel, two barrel bands, front nose cap, cleaning rod, all the sight parts, butt plate, mag housing, front sight, trigger, trigger spring/sear. Yes, the nose cap is also marked. Have not checked some of the smaller parts like the interrupter.

The replacement bolt has all Izhevsk arsenal parts including the cocking piece.

The hand guard must be replaced because there is a "penciled in number" of a different serial number on the inside of it. This was done to the sniper rifles (my RGUNS snipers all have it also).

The barrel shank has all the "proof marks" high up to accommodate the scope numbers as a sniper should have.

This rifle has very little slack and a pretty light pull. Extremely smooth. Best of all I own on Mosins.

It has a late war stock on it which is appropriate for a 1944 M91/30.

That's going to be some serious cleanup on that grease. Almost looks like layers of caked on grease from the photos. Beautiful sniper you have there.

Nice Dolk, looks to have been well taken care of. Will be interested in a range report when you get to it. I have been pondering one of these myself, so will follow this along as you try her out!

Took quite a bit to get it cleaned up, but it's looking better. The bore is excellent.

Very Nice!

I wouldn't be able to resist re-scoping that one with original non refurbished parts especially since the prices have come down significantly lately and a few original bases have been available out of Russia recently.

I wasn't thinking of scoping it right off seeing I got it on a whim at the last moment. I just wanted to get another one and have it set, then maybe later add the scope if it seemed right..... and I could get a good price on one later on.

After buying this one, I had an offer for an original Izhevsk WWII base (rarest part of the set up) at a very good price, so I bought it. They are very hard to come by and original base. I'll keep my eyes open for a nice 1944 progress scope and mount. If one pops up cheap, I'll get it, but time is on my side! :bwink:

I wanted to buy one of dolk's ex-snipers from Sam Co; however I did notice samco was also selling the mosin PUs.
Manufactured in Russia. 7.62x54R caliber, 5 round bent bolt action M91/30 Sniper arsenal refinished rifle. Comes with original refurbished PU scope, mount, oil can, tools, leather lens cover, and a serial number book printed in Russian.
**Note: wooden stock may show marring/handling storage marks and some flaking varnish
VERY LIMITED QUANTITY! Please don’t miss out on ordering your ORIGINAL RUSSIAN M91/30 SNIPER RIFLE!
Does this suggest that samco is selling Molot Snipers?

They are selling three different snipers now.

One is the ex Yugo snipers that are missing the base, mount, and scope. These had the scopes removed by Yugoslavia and were never refurbished. So thet don't have the typical shellac on them. They are as they were during WWII and not refurbished.
(Top of this page)
https://www.samcoglobal.com/rifles-nagant.html

Another they sell is the second one down on that same page, but it is not (nor ever was) a sniper rifle. They are standard M91/30's with a bent bolt. As these were imported into the US, they must be like the bent bolt M91/30's that RGUNS sells. Not really a sniper except the bolt.

Then they sell these sniper that are "refurbished".

Seeing no one else (except RGUNS) has refurbished snipers in any quanity, I'd have to say they must be handled by Molot. Buy one and find out! :bwink:

What do the holes for 2 holes/pins and 4 holes/pins stand for?

Which numbered holes are specific for SVT, PEM, and PU?

Thanks

Yeah Samco is offering no details on their latest batch but I'm assuming Molot. I'd be interested to see what you get with their three tier price system and Samco doesn't separate the Tulas like Classic and AIM.

My concern would be that the worst shipped rifle I've ever received was from Samco. It was just loose in a box, no packing material at all and the bolt handle was sticking out of the box.

Basically, On a PU sniper, there are two threaded holes and two holes that do not have threads. In the holes without thread they put a "pin" in each hole. Those pins are very tight in those holes. The base went over the two pins to steady the base. Then two screws went through the base and into the two threaded hole to hold the base on tight.

These rifles come with either the two pins already in them (2 holes and two pins is what they call that) or no pins in the rifle (4 holes is what they call that). Why you wouldn't want the two pins is beyond me, but you can get them either way.

I'm not understanding your second question (I was up late last night! :chuckles: ). What we are talking about here is the PU sniper rifles.

I have only bought two rifles from Samco. One a very long time ago but both were packed well. This sniper was wrapped in bubble wrap and then slipped into the box with more packing. I though it was pack really well. Maybe different packers or something? If anyone sent me a rifle and it was damaged because of lack of packaging, I'd send it back. But most dealer do a decent job. I had one sent to me in a plastic gun box and that was slid back into it's cardboard box it came in. That was great.

Seems they have changed their web page again.

https://www.samcoglobal.com/rifles-nagant.html

The refurbs are on the top now (2 choices), and the on the bottom is the two choice for holes (which are the Yugo snipers) and below that, the bent bolt non snipers.

To be honest, sometimes I don't think they really know what they have. I get that opinion from talking to them. It's like the pin deal on the Yugo snipers, they are the same thing, just missing pins. I don't think they know that.

Here is a WWII Izhevsk PU base on my Yugo sniper (same sniper as above).

I will warn everyone, The base units are not all drilled exactly the same from the Russian arsenals. The arsenals "custom" drilled each sniper. So those pin holes and screw holes may not line up if you try to mount an original base on it (if you can find one). This rifle had the rear pin and the two screw hole match my base perfect, but that front pin did not. So it was alter the rifle (no way, I don't like altering anything), or alter the base (no way) or alter the pin or remove it. The pins are easy to find and replaceable. Neither of the pins are really needed to keep the scope at zero. It will stay at zero with out any pins installed.

My understanding is, that most of them don't match and some are way off. So keep this in mind if you want to try and replace a scope on one of these. There are a lot of original scope, and mounts running around, but the darn base can be almost impossible to find at times.

And remember, the Yugo snipers all have replaced optics. None of them (except for a very few) have optics. I know of a couple only. So technically these are sniper rifles that are not refurbished, and have replaced scopes (not by the arsenals). The value will probably always be some where just below the RGUNS snipers because of that. But what they do have that the RGUNS snipers don't have is .... they are not refurbished. They have their original finish on them.

If anyone wants to see one of these Yugoslavian issue PU rifles in complete, completely original Yugo military issue condition and configuration (including the brown leather sling that the Yugos used on these and their Mausers), and was in fact still Yugo military property at the time, check out the old Clint Eastwood movie "Kelly's Heroes". This movie was filmed in Croatia in 1970 and featured a well used WW2 Soviet PU sniper rifle straight out of Yugo "JNA" Army inventory, as well as numerous other WW2 German and Allied weapons and vehicles that belonged to the Yugo military, and even Yugoslavian soldiers dressed in WW2 German or U.S. uniforms as the background "extras".
