Polish M-44

Post by mag318 »

This is my first post on this forum and I look forward to participating. This afternoon I received a mint unfired Polish M-44 made at Radom arsenal in 1955. I've been collecting military firearms for over 50 years and this is the nicest MN I've ever come across. Tried to upload a photo but it failed stating the file was to big. What do you guys think of the Polish M-44s?

One of the nicest machined and most accurate Mosins out there.

The Polish have the nicest finishes and you see a few "unissued" M44 from them

I don’t know if there is such a thing as an unfired M44. Someone can correct me if I’m wrong. I know little about the Mosins. I recently bought an M38 that was advertised as new. Of course it was not, but still a very nice Mosin.

How big is your photo? Do you know how to resize, or upload to another site then post the link here?

Edit your pics in Paint. Resize to 640x480 and save under a "NEW" file name. Most of the time the cameras take pictures that are way too large to upload here.

I'm skeptical of the unfired deal too. I bought mine off of a trusted Mosin collector. He didn't think it had been fired. I see no signs of it but its not like it has a documented history.

Welcome to the board, I have one of the unissued Polish M44's packed away, one of the nicest M44's made.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

I believe this M-44 was unfired since leaving the factory because of the following. When firing jacketed military ammunition it's nearly impossible to remove all the copper fouling. Even days after cleaning a rifle if you swab the bore with a product like Hoppes No9, let it sit then run a dry patch through the bore and there will almost always be green traces from the copper. Do this again 6 months later and the same thing will occur. When I swabbed the bore this afternoon I let the Hoppes sit for a couple hours and when I ran a dry patch through it there was no evidence of copper fouling. Plus the bolt face was spotless where you will usually see a ring from the primer sealant used in most military ammunition. I think these mint Polish M-44 specimens left the factory and then just stored for decades prior to sale.
Technically there's no such thing as an unfired gun since they are all proof fired at the factory.

Fired, fired once or twice, or never fired, it doen't really matter. These appear as absolutely brand new as is possible. As much so as any Remington, Winchester, or Ruger right out of the box. Congrats and welcome. Since you are working out the picture sizing issue here is a quick video I grabbed from Youtube that I'd bet a dollar looks just like yours.

Fired once, fired twice... I agree, it doesn't really matter. Your bore is likely close or better than my unissued Polish.

Nice YouTube video, there is a lot of great stuff there. I wish I would have bought several of these in the 90s when they first showed up at bargain basement prices, but at the time I was buying K98s in droves. The thing that drives me nuts with current imports are the billboard import stamps most have on the receiver. My new Ploish M-44 has a import stamp that is so small you really have to look for it. It's to bad they still don't mark them like that, or better yet on the barrel near the muzzle.

You lucky Devil! :devil2:

That is an outstanding acquisition aka piece :bwink: :bwink: :bwink:

The problem is I don't know if I could shoot it? Or put it back. :vconfused: :vconfused:

If it were mine it would probably be relegated as a safe queen. :angry4: Like some of my others. :b sad:
