Like Ron said "you can't complain about a free rifle" That's what makes it all the better. I have three 22 Cal. rifles now and only paid for one, the M1969 Romanian Trainer and that was only $69 when I got it. I'm not apposed to spending some money on 22 but I haven't needed to until now. Now when I find a decent older Ruger 10/22 I'll be spending to get it if I have too. After all besides the vz24 Mauser that's been putting meat in the freezer the 22 cals are the workhorses around here.Celt wrote:Weldon said" . My goal is to put zero dollars into it besides the ammo that goes through it."
That's about what i've done also. I already had the scope. The sling I have on it is an sks that I bought for a dollar. I just can't see dumping a bunch of money in a22.

Re: Stevens/Savage Model 62 Project Rifle - Follow up
I was just looking at this post and realized I never posted the after pictures. Well here they are. Before and after. This rifle had not only white paint but black paint over the whole rifle including the receiver and barrel. Not sure if I mentioned this before but I ended up using Hoppes #9 to remove the paint on the whole rifle. It was slow going but effective. It was my buddy's kids first rifle and was just plain filthy and in bad need of attention. It's not in seriously better shape, works flawlessly and looks a lot better. It's my go to varmint rifle and was used just last night to dispatch and unwanted intruder, a very large male possum, that's been stalking my chicken pens. He's now fish food.

Nice resto job mike!
You have enemies? Good. That means you've stood up for something, sometime in your life.

Re: Stevens/Savage Model 62 Project Rifle
Thanks Jeremy, I'd forgotten all about this thread until someone posted a 91/30 that someone painted and was asking for suggestions about removing it. I remembered this post and looked at it and realized I'd never posted the after pictures. Shortly after I made this post my house was struck by lightening and I was dealing with that for a while so I got sidetracked. I just took those after pictures tonight. That's one reason they're not very good. It was getting dark. It also had a few spots where I'd scrubbed the bluing off to fixed some scratches and I touched them up with the new stuff I've been using, Oxpho-Blue.Celt wrote:Nice resto job mike!

Looks good Mike
I just love .22 especially free or cheep ones. I like fixing them up because most of them are not historic or collectibles guns
and it is just fun to make them work and look good.

Re: Stevens/Savage Model 62 Project Rifle
Thanks, I was really happy with the way it turned out and it's a good working rifle now. My buddy gave it to me because we have a lot of varmints around here and until I got this I was using a Winchester Mod 250 lever gun and a Romanian M1969 Trainer as my go to guns. No semi-autos. At that point I'd fixed up maybe 4 or 5 rifles for him and his family for the fun of it. He like a lot of people down here feel like they need to reciprocate even though I made it clear that wasn't necessary. Of course I now have a S&W model 22a also that I traded Fred_G some ammo for.Buckhead wrote:WeldonHunter wrote:Thanks Jeremy, I'd forgotten all about this thread until someone posted a 91/30 that someone painted and was asking for suggestions about removing it. Let me make a short, open, blanket comment. There are no good guns. There are no bad guns. Any gun in the hands of a bad man is a bad thing. Any gun in the hands of a descent person is no threat to anyone--- except bad people. -- Charleton Heston
Guns are not good, they are not evil. Save those descriptions for the people holding the firearm. -- Unknown

1937 Izhevsk
1935/48/50 Tula (hex)
1939 Tula (laminate stock)
And many other firearms
