My (new to me) 1948 M44

Post by mberoose »

Finally got my hands on a Mosin. :D

1948, matching numbers M44, the one I mentioned in my first thread. viewtopic.php?f=5&t=2012

To me, it's in EXCELLENT condition. There's almost nothing in the way of scuffs or scratches, no patches in the wood anywhere. Wood is beautiful, shiny bore, rifling looks great.

Aftermarket butt plate, but the stocker is in the box of bullets that you'll see below -

It's an Izhevsk, though the rest of the markings are a bit foreign to me.

Came with about 100 rounds

Got it for $200.

Thanks again to everybody for their help and guidance. :toast:

That's awesome! You scored on your very first Mosin :) Congrats!

Make sure to report back how well she shoots. I bet she does just fine!

Pretty sweet. The GL above the serial number is just the Roman letters for the Cyrillic ГЛ.

Thanks again to everyone.

My buddy's cousin is coming home from Afghanistan soon, and he said he'll sell me his 91/30 for $80. No idea of the specifics of it, but at 80 bucks......I really don't care.

My '48 was supposed to be a '47, the seller made a typo in the description, but as at the time I didn't have a '48 either so I let it pass. These post war rifles are all low production compared to 1944 and sometimes dates can be harder to find. You get that 1947 M44 yet Ron?

Probably ran 50-60 rounds through it today. There were really no surprises. Seemed to be sighted in pretty well, was just a little high at 100 yards (as expected), but overall fairly consistent. Trigger shocked me, a little bit of initial creep but a nice crisp break for an old rifle. Very nice.

I have to get accustomed to how this thing feeds the first round, it didn't want to chamber it a few times, but after shuffling the rounds a bit, it fed. Think I just pushed them down a bit too far. No big deal. Chalk that up to me not knowing it yet.

Kick? Oh yeah, but it never failed to entertain...and the gun got attention, that's for sure. Maybe the huge bang and big fireball had something to do with it. Ended the day with a bunch of slugs out of my buddy's Mossberg 590A1, and had some time on his Ruger Mini-14 and Yugo SKS. Great day at the range, very happy with my purchase. :D

Also, some guy was there with a Smith & Wesson 500. The concussive blast from that thing was borderline ridiculous. Would love to give that monster a whirl some day....I think.

Sounds fun to me. When you load the mosin if you push the last one to far it will be hard to lock. The last bullet should have a slight upwards point towards the chamber. Once you play with it you will get it. :D :D

Congrats on that one. That is a nice rifle.

I need a '48, and actually saw a forced matched one in good condition today at a gun shop. The owner wanted $269.00 firm for it so I passed. This same shop had a large pile of 91/30s, all '42s and '43s, most Eped and wanted a $149.00 for them.

Thanks for the kind words.

So I just had a bit of a random discovery...turns out, I received much more than 90-100 rounds.

I mean, when I was leaving the guy's house yesterday, I knew the box of ammo felt pretty heavy, and it looked like more than 90-100, but I was more focused on the rifle at the time.

But just now I emptied out the box...and keep in mind 50-60 shots were fired this morning.

I wouldn't be surprised if the round count was closer to 225+. So the way I see it, I actually got the rifle for around 150 bucks. :D Just more icing on the cake.

I know the loose ammo is the 147 grain light ball stuff, could the stuff in the blue box be anything different? Stamped "Made in Czech Republic," totally different color than the others.
